Slacking at work
My lower back is facked. I can barely walk today. I'm pretty sure I screwed it up last week lifting a recycled paper barrel. But the thing is, EVERYONE here knows what I do when I'm not at work. And of course they are going to try and say that I must have hurt myself on the bike. And it's quite possible that riding has aggravated it.

How does this work? Is it my word against theirs? Anyone had a similar experience? Should I just eat a bunch of Advil and quit whining?

If you're fairly certain that it was hurt lifting the barrel - pursue it. It's not illegal to go out and maim yourself (ride a bike) during your spare time, and if you got hurt at work, well... that's what worker's comp is for. IF you are able to ride though it sounds like you might just need to go see a chiro - I thought I had hurt my back jumping off a retaining wall last year, it turns out that the way I was stretching (my back) actually caused the problem - anyhow, the chirpractor got me fixed up and it only cost 45 bucks without insurance.

Persue it...they typically only flip out if you are going on permanent or long term disability. Unfortunately, there are so many false workers comp claims that legitimate claims are scrutinized and you get harrassed...people have f'd it up for everyone by calling bs claims. You need to find out what your companies policy is on on the job injuries. Some companies will give you a certain amount of time before you go out on a workers comp claim...some it's like 72 hours, others it's a week, and we get 90 days before we have to go on wc. But if you have to take time off for it, do NOT be caught riding your bike.

And a word of advice to everyone...NEVER ever share too much info about your personal life with coworkers and bosses. I was honest about breaking my finger while mountain biking, and it came up on my performance evaluation, even though I didn't go out on long term disability, I did miss about a month for my surgery...so this time when I crashed and broke my hand...I tripped over a step. The last thing I'm gonna do is incriminate myself. I dont' sit here all day and take sh*t from bitchy people to go plop my ass on the sofa after work and on the weekends...

Darn tootin I'll preach it! I'm a personnel rep for a group of tree trimmers, sidewalk and landscape guys and I see this happen all the time. People really getting hurt on the job and getting harrassed, and people who are just lazy f*cks taking advantage.

One guy managed to get out on permanent disability. He's a downhiller AND a hardcore bmx'er...guy keeps getting caught in the skatepark on his bike...he rides a rigid harley...and he's so full of **** but some guy like Echo will get harrassed for a legitmate injury...now his wife is out on long term disability (works right next to me) for STRESS leave...because they are suing the City I work for for HARRASSEMENT! Her bs claim is affecting me and my coworker because we work together and have to cover for each other...it's BULLSH*T!

It's hard not to talk about your personal life...and then I back my car into a front parking spot so I can see my bike all day, so it's obvious what I do, but still...I sat here all day with a broken hand on a Monday because it was clear I was riding over the weekend (bike on car for an out of town trip on Friday) and I went to the dr. after work that monday and came in tuesday with a cast...tripped over a step in the yard Monday night...that's all they need to know...I didn't miss any work and its no ones beeswax.

The thing about mt. biking is it doesn't strengthen your stomach muscles.... Your stomach muscles support your back, and since your really strong in other areas from riding, well the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Hence lifting a heavy object strained you good. Personally i don't know or care what you do with getting money from your employer, but the best way to heal yourself is to rest it, then from now on start doing back stretches and crunches and other stomach strengthening exercises. You're getting old, the deal is when you wake up in the morning when your young you're suprised that something hurts or feels bad, when you get old you're suprised that something actually feels good and doesn't hurt.

i'm a roofer which is also doesn't add much muscle to the stomach since most of the work you're bent over (yes i said bent over). In the summer time with epic riding i'm completely wasted physically. Believe it or not i do follow my own advice i do crunches and assorted other stretches because i need to protect my back which i've thrown out before multiple times. I do think the ball is a good idea but my apartment is clutter with too many bikes and a lifesize spider man, i simply don't have the room.
