Easy course or not there is still one winner and everybody else chasing him. I happen ti think you can have good racing on all kinds of courses and it's good that the WC requires all different skills of the riders. If every course was Champery, we could just hand Sam Hill the World Cup today.

I definitely agree. It is nice to see more than just who can not touch their brakes on a course. Even though some of the courses are more boring than others but it rewards the guys that put a ton of hard work into their pedal skill, endurance, etc.
I am excited to see who took their time off seriously and put the most endurance work in to win the first stop.

I haven't heard any complaints about the course. Flat-out wide open.
Agreed. I really love the track but I may be biased as I helped build alot of it along with some other riders. Everyone I have spoken to who actually rode the track thinks its brilliant. Not the most technical track, nor is it the fastest but at the same time it doesn't have as much pedaling as Canberra(Which Greg seems to like anyways). Alot of the riders say its a really fun track and thats why we ride, for fun. A fun track doesn't mean its not challenging though, it just means its an enjoyable track to ride.

Towing the party line.
Riders seem to prefer it to the Worlds Track this year, and thats further to travel to. But yes, just like Canberra this is not SA's best city to visit nor best track to race on. But if you actually walked the track during todays racing instead of sitting in the car by the finish line all day you would see that this is no sea otter :-)
Funny, but we walked the track days ago. It doesn't even compare to most of the other world cup tracks and has the longest almost perfectly flat section I have ever seen in a downhill.

Almost 40 hours traveling and tons of money for everyone to get here for what amounts to a huge sea otter course (with a nice top section). Not sure about you, but I have heard a TON of complaints from many team managers the last couple of weeks.

hmmm So the track sounds like it will reward the fitter, big guys... I'll go with Gee, Minnaar, Peaty, and Rennie up there (if he has hit the slimfast). Of Course little Sammy on the podium too

wahhhhhhhhh

ever seen the finish into the 96' worlds, half a mile of pedaling through grass and is known as one of the coolest worlds tracks in the history of the sport.

It's a 'bike' race, deal with it.....oh, I forgot, you are not even riding.

Pointless since it all comes down to chance pretty much amongst the top guys on any given day, but what the hell, I'll bite:

1. Gee
2. Minnaar
3. Kovarik
4. Peat
5. Blenkinsop

Hill (not wanting to start his season with a crash) takes it too easy and finishes 10th or so.

I, like you would prefer to see a better track, especially since this event is in my birth country, Neethling and Minnaar have provided as much feedback as they can to organizers over the last few months to make the track as race worthy as possible within limitations of the chosen venue. Unfortunately we know that with the UCI, venues are not chosen by the quality of their downhill track. I wish it weren't so but thats how it is.

Its been over 10 years since there has been a DH event in South Africa, so i applaud the UCI for bringing DH racing back to South Africa. It is great that they are bringing the sport to new markets and allowing local riders and public to have the privilege of watching a world cup race live just this once in their home county again, just like they did a few years ago in Brazil. It is going a long way to broaden the exposure of downhill globally.

It is also a series, so if one track out of 8 challenges riders to use their chains and pedals (both two big components on a bicycle) as well as bike handling skills, then so be it.

The costs are not much higher than any other race. My air ticket from Oregon to RSA is the same as to most Europe destinations, and tickets from Europe to South Africa are only marginally more than from Europe to USA or Canada. With 23 hours of travel time including layovers from West coast its not all that bad. I just wish they had the race in Cape Town.....The team managers will be happy when the week is out when they see their weeks accommodation, food and alcohol bill is about a fifth of what it usually is in Europe, and when they don't have to worry about stressing to have bikes and kit ready for sea otter the following week :-)

WC circuit should return to South America again...Brazil(well, I'm from Brazil hehehehe). But if not Brazil, Chile or Argentina.

I'm all for it as long as it's not the weekend directly before/after a race far-far away...say like Quebec to Brazil three days later.

damn it's hard to guess this stuff, though i think Hill's intense training in the pedal stakes has gotta be worth something...

Couldn't agree more. I would kill to get to Stallenbosch and see capetown. As we discussed last night at the mall...this is sort of like the canberra of the country. Much better riding is available, so it's lame that we are stuck where we are.

As for the bills, accommodation is about the same it seems, but food is definitely cheaper.

Will tracey hannah race world cups this year?
nope. was helping her look for a ride this year, but there's no openings ANYWHERE. baaaad season to look for a factory ride.. especially for a girl. Considering the likes of Bryn Atkinson, Amiel Cavalier, Jill Kintner & more couldn't find a ride.. there was no chance for little trace.
honestly, i would be surprised if she's done w/ racing internationally altogether... which would be a bummer for sure.

I can't believe Bryn couldn't find a ride, I can think of a few people who have full rides and can barley qualify, if not at all for that matter.

The perils of being a 'couple' on the circuit...industry frowns upon dating athletes/staff. I speak from experience, not a bash on Bryn or Jill. There is some weird/lame unwritten law in the industry goon checklist that say 'no couples on same race team'.
