What’s the reason you guys seem to hate the Athertons so much? Hardline is an amazing event, Rachel has dominated the women’s circuit for years, often with times far below any other competitor and Gee is great rider (let’s not forget the Stevie Smith/Gee year was an epic battle).

Sure they don’t sign autographs, but is that it?

These bikes look sweet as fuck and the fact you can get them customized to fit your wildest fantasies should only be more to like. I’m sure the costs will be unreasonable, but hey! Winner winner chicken dinner.
Largely agree. To be fair, Gee went through a bit of a 'salty' phase a few years back and didn't always seem to be the most gracious in losing. I think the "Sam Dale incident" probably didn't help with this image but can't really blame him for that. Seems to be much more personable in interviews these days and I think he's probably won back a lot of people by coming back so hard after his injuries. And Rachel is smashing it. Don't see any reason why this will change this season.

Be very interested to see how the Atherton bikes go. Like others have said, they'll probably need a mass produced trail bike at a lower price point to keep afloat. Don't think the custom DH bikes are going to bring in too much moolah... Making kids bikes could be lucrative if they get the price/specs/geo right. So many little shredders at Whis last summer.

tl;dr - Gee earned the nickname Lord bummer.

Hmm...
Probably not
also...

Washed up Dan?

Erm...

The Lord Bummer stuff is funny but fuck sake Dan's lucky not to have had Stevie join him.

I'm glad they're bringing out proper custom bikes. Dan was riding, racing and testing proto bikes for Muddyfox at 17yrs old. MF had some batshit (and just plain shit) ideas back then and he delivered the goods both racing them and breaking them. 20 years on both the Afferton bros probably have a pretty good grasp on what works well.
Makes perfect sense to stay in the industry when it's all you've ever known your entire adult life.

or is Vouilloz a soor pussed washed up E bike riding prick round here these days too?
Someone always tries to ruin the fun. :disgust1:

No hate... why do you feel there's hate? I don't even agree that they don't sign autographs... from what I understand, they do. The only time they're "off limits" is when they're getting ready for their runs. which is fair.

I think they run a tight ship, and it's somewhat scripted. after being in the game so long, the script is getting a little stale - for sure - but saying that doesn't translate to hate does it? It's not like anyone has a bad day any time they do well and curses them for it?!

You are sort of right. Are there any examples?
Tomac retired on his brand.
Nico Vouilloz did ride his own brand and then went to Lapierre (although enduro).
Boardman opened the brand after retirement, no?
Eddy Merckx?
Chipollini?
Canfield Bros?

Lemond brand was probably the most successful in dollar terms of all of these (besides Merckx?). Lemond basically put TDF on the map for Americans, though... hard to compare anyone to him besides ol' One Ball.

I personally don't love the Athertons, but their 3-rider family, racing results and name recognition should give them a chance at success with a brand.

However, I think the aesthetics of that robot bike seem to be a bit of a disconnect with what "Atherton" means to me. I see their name on a more conventional design.

why even begin with glasgow when the events are all over scotland?
Simple answer is because Glasgow got all the money for cycling because they held the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and has Scotlands only indoor velodrome, purpose built XC course and internatinal standard BMX track/stadium. They also held the RR so have everything already in place to roll that out again.
There are no hills in Glasgow suitable for a DH race at all and a marathon XC race would be a logiostical nightmare nr Glasgow compared to the tweedvalley (Glentress) where events like this are held all the time.

still not the claimed "all events at on venue" event when the venue is all over scotland
