We have been apartment hunting & found a nice duplex on the street we want to live on, but the landlord wont allow cats, but dogs are OK.

I dont understand the thinking here.

Damn, feline discrimination! No equal housing oppurtunity there.

I've been running into the opposite problem - cats okay, but when they find out I have two dogs it is an instant "No - sorry you seem like a nice guy - but we don't allow dogs" :(

Damn canine discrimination. ;) :(

The only thing I can think of not allowing cats when dogs are ok is smell issues. If a cat marks a spot in the house, chances are you will NEVER get rid of that smell, where as dogs don't leave as much of a sent.

Also, dogs tend to have fewer issues once trained while cats can be a lot harder to deal with (depending on both the cat and the person).

Last night, one of our cats knocked our wedding picture off the DVD player and shattered the glass in the frame. :( Damn cat! One less treat for her when I get home tonight. I'm not sure which cat it was, so they both suffer my wrath of less snacks.

Ok...who's fault is this? Unless the kitties are not allowed to run rampant all over the tables, tv's and such, then it's not THEIR fault...my cat is not allowed on tables and counters...shes a good kitty! Probably much more well behaved than yours...HAHAHAH!

ONE of them knows this and abides by the rule. The other one knows the rule but does not care. :D

One less treat for each cat is pretty harsh punishment if you ask me. Even worse, maybe I just won't play with them for a while.

Using basic logic, we can say:

Cat=Evil

Therefore, Cats+Duplex=Destruction

In all seriousness, aren't cats much more difficult to train for obedience than dogs? There may be a reason for the cat ban (past tenants), try speaking with the owners about it and seeing if you can get the felines in. My cousin had the same problem, but they managed to get the landlord to let the cat in by signing a contract that said they would either move out or get rid of the cat if it caused any problems. That might be a little too drastic for your tastes, if it was me, I'd probably just look elsewhere for somewhere to live.

My cats can do whatever they want, when ever they want. So far I haven't lost anything too valuable and what I have lost is no big deal - correcting cats is a futile effort. I just go with whatever they do.

I've been running into a different problem - cats okay, but when they find out I have 8 bikes it is an instant "No - sorry you seem like a nice guy - but we don't allow that many bikes" :(

Damn 2-wheeled discrimination. ;) :(

How exactly do you explain to her she's not allowed on tables and counters?

Maybe he is allergic to cats... or doesnt want his house to be contaminated with feline dander because he knows people that are allergic to cats. My father is severely allergic to cats, when he was house shopping he would refuse to even look at houses that had cats that lived in them.

Personally I am slightly allergic to cats and I would probably have that rule too If I were a landlord... nothing against cats, but they make me sneeze and feel like crap and worst of all, cats make my eyes itch and hurt like crazy for hours if I touch them and then touch my face.

There are ways to teach a cat. When she jumps up onto a counter or table that she is not allowed, make a loud noise or spray her with a squirt bottle. Cats are reasonably intelligent ('cept mine) and can link her action to our negative response. Problem is, some cats just don't care. :D

Typically with a spray bottle... squirt the little sucker everytime they jump on things you don't want them on.

Not sure if this is a good idea for the DVD player though... but it worked for us.

And cats can be trained much like a dog. My cat will fetch things, come when called, and even knows basic comands like 'stay'.

We even walk him on a leash...

we used to do that. now, the one who gets in all the trouble just looks at you and lets herself be sprayed!

it's a good thing for her she's so cute.

yeah, Gravey has a harness and leash for trips to the vet or up to Canada...

Other tricks for training:

Don't want them to scratch furniture...there's this neat sticky tape you can put on the corners of your couch...they hate the way it feels on their paws so they leave it alone after awhile, then you remove the tape. Your petstore probably has it.

Don't want them on the counters? Spread some aluminum foil on there...they hate the noise!!!

Generally as they get older, the "acting up" is a result of them trying to tell you something. They're not happy, they're lonely, they're bored etc etc. When Gravey misses me she takes her aggression out on my running shoes....When bluebell misses me she brings me weird presents and leaves them in my bed (usually only feathers from a toy).
When they're bored they like to get ontop of my bookshelves and somehow only knock over the non-breakables...go figure...

Both of my cats knew they weren't allowed on the counters and never did it while I was home. But I would find the evidence of them being up thier while I was gone :blah: (Pet peeve of mine....cats on the counters...yuck!!!)

Just say NO ZAKK...GIT down! she's a pretty good kitty...pretty well behaved...I used to catch her on the counter when I had a fish up there...and then when there was a bird feeder on a tree in the back...she would sit up there and look at the birds...and then freak when you'd walk in...see...I'm kinda the boss of her...

well.....they $hit in a box, that was pretty easy. Other than that we let them do what they want. Our bikes make more of a mess than they do.

....& yes they are evil. Thats why we love them.
