Okay, this is beginning to piss me off. My first interview was almost a month ago. So far I have had 4 others and then a, "we are going to check your references". That was on Tuesday. Today I got an e-mail saying, we were slammed and we havent been able to call any of your references yet. Also none of my references have called me to tell me that they heard from them.

WTF are they doing? Do I want to work for a company that cant even find the time to make a few phone calls? I know they are working without a Sr. Art director right now... her last day was last Fri. so what exactly are they putting it off for?

If they're busy, then they obviously need you, so that's good, yeah?

I'd say be polite and persistent, even as you keep looking. So with the company that you interviewed with, call the HR department and ask them if there is any progress. If they say no, ask them when you should check back, then follow their lead. It shows you are interested, yet keeps you from being annoying. HR is likely to put in a call to the hiring manager on your behalf.
