I lost all respect for Slash when he played on an awards show with an unusual choice of bandmate... "Introducing Michael Jackson and his friend Slash!" (still the weirdest line I've ever heard.)
Well then you should know that Eddie VanHalen played the guitar part on 'Beat It'. He did the solo. Micheal wanted him to solo over the chourus and he couldn't. Eddie suggested soloing over the bridge and the rest is history. That part is what made the song for him (MJ), Eddie didn't get a dime from it. Eddie did it as a favor.
As far as M J wanting Slash on a record...Ohhh hells yeah. If I was that good I'd play on his record in a heartbeat. Of course,I'd ask for royalties, which I think Slash gets.
I don't think he's sold out, he was probably asked by VW and agreed because it would probably be fun for him. He's probably already rich as hell anyways so I don't think one commercial will do much for him. But if he starts doing more then i'll start to get annoyed.
I saw them open up for the Cult in 88 or so. It was a small coliseum. I was passing out some cards for a Butthole Surfers show the next week at the Backroom (I think) and they walked up and started talking (GNR that is). I didn't get an autograph because I thought they would die. 2 months later they released Welcome to the Jungle (again, I think). Anyway - kind of cool to meet them, but not life altering.
Slash doing VW commercials is no gayer than guys drive Bugs or Jettas though.
I don't know about "credibility", but he had mad respect from me. When we got the autographs his sentences were composed of nothing but curse words. I have total respect for people that make sentences using curse words as nouns, verbs and adjectives.
I haven't liked Van Halen since they became "Van Hagar."
.. and in the mid-80's, Michael Jackson was still cool. He didn't get weird until around 1990. The Slash thing was after his first molestation controversy.
I just saw this commercial - it's actually pretty cool, although I think anyone under 25 is going to say "who's Slash?" I was expecting some cooler guitar music too - that one sounds like something he made up on the spot, when he was feeling particularly lazy.
Slash aside, I don't get what the heck its for. So the VW has an Aux In? big frikken deal. I had a head unit with an aux in in my 91 Volvo Station Wagon 6 years ago......
not to mention that 'selling out' is supposed to refer to the selling off of ones 'artistic integrity'. Now tell me he wouldn't punch you in the face for claiming he had that in the first place....
...ooo no wait its all about street cred for the post-pubecent set....lthumbsdown:
