The physics model is a little funny - if the bubble is under a certain size, you can pull her through them with enough momentum/speed. Actually, if she freefalls long enough and builds up speed, the same thing happens.
edit: also, it seems that bubbles are only generated as she falls vertically. If you fling her horizontally, there are no bubbles until she starts falling again.
