Noone seems to go there so I'll try this here:

Here's the deal. My only computer (Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop) is about 7 years old now, and is DEFINITELY on it's way out.....using about 58 of the 60GB HD, very, very slow, lots of lagging, overheating and shutting down, etc. Given it's age, it was never a powerhouse to begin with going by today's standards/technology, and add to that 7 years of almost nonstop use on all the electrical components.........it's definitely time for something new.

Now, all I mainly use my laptop for is:

Por....erm.....internet
CD ripping/media playing (WMP and Winamp)
Microsoft Office (Excel and Word, mainly)
Adobe Acrobat/Reader (PDFs)
Zune Software
Basic picture/video storing and editing (no fancy chop/editing software, however)

No games, no downloading music/movies/vids/games, no crazy networking stuff.....really simple, low memory operations. However, I'd like the ability to run Solidworks efficiently in the future. Since I'm getting something new, I will most likely be getting something a lot more compact (this thing is a beast), so I would most likely take it on trips frequently.

Should I be looking into netbooks, or do I use it enough to justify getting a regular notebook? The size of the netbooks (~10" screen) is tempting, and after seeing the specs of some of the higher end ones ($4-500), they seem pretty damn decent. However, for another couple hundred, you can get a notebook that is on average double the capacity/performance of said netbooks.....but do I need it? Ideally I'd like to stay in the $3-400 range, but if need be I'd make the jump to $500 if it's worth it. I really don't feel like spending $700, as I'm trying to be somewhat reserved in my spending since I'm looking at buying a house.

I have been out of the computer loop since I bought my current laptop 6-7 years ago, so I have no idea what I should be looking for. What say you nerdmonkeys?:nerd:

You may want to reconsider a netbook if you plan on using Solidworks. Using a small display with Solidworks will be a real pain. If you plan on using a full blown recent version of Solidworks, you will need a fair amount of memory. SW has become a resource hog as of late.

Netbooks are great for surfing porn, not so much for productivity. I have an Aspire One running Ubuntu 9.02 and love it 85% of the time.

We got an HP Laptop at Best Buy and use it for personal ('net, e-mail, LUNA stuff, pictures, movies, etc.) and work (mostly Office stuff, but I have Finale and a couple of other music programs on it too) and it's been great thus far.

Dell Latitude E5500 15.4" Refurb $559 but you should be able to get something similar for about $500 shipped with one of their 20% off coupons - they sent them out every few weeks:

Two HP laptops in my family (GF's and parents) and both have been reliable, fast, and plenty useful. Both were under $700. Really hard to go wrong for that price and with those specs, but an Apple will be much whiter.

The only problems I've had with either center around the touchpad on my parents computer. It's "snapped" in, and every once in a while it pops out a little. Not really an issue in function, just annoying to have it happen.

I would definitely consider one for myself, and I'm hyper picky about computers, having hand selected every component of my tower PC.

I was actually looking at this one:

Seems similar to the ones you've pointed out. Any good?

It's a Studio 1555 only with different specs, overall slightly lower spec'd but the same model and you can't use a coupon. Keep in mind with most consumer notebooks today you often get gloss screens by default (Dell calls it Truelife). Glossy has ton of glare/reflection and some people can't stand them especially if you are staring at the screen for hours. It does not specify if its 64-bit Windows check on that, would be recommended with 4GB and the system can take up 8GB.

If you want to make the current one last a little longer take some compressed air and blow out the vents in the back right hand corner. Dell poorly designed the heat sink so it tends to collect dust and overheat easily leading to lagging and shut downs. I ran into the same thing, and judging by the notification of the class action law suit I got a while back so did a lot of other people.

we just picked up a laptop since our old Toshiba bit the dust. We were in the same boat, not wanting to spend too much because other computers would do the bulk of the work... I have been pleasantly suprised at the fit and finish, and the workhorse nature of this inexpensive machine.

we picked it up at Best Buy for 499. I couldn't beat the price and now I am very pleased with its performance.

That trick only works so long. Been doing that for years. Sadly it's just time to move onto something new.

I bought my Dell Vostro, dual core processor 4gb ram, 300gb internal, 1tb external, and a 23 inch monitor: $650 free shipping.

I bought my Dell Mini 10, 1.6ghz processor, 1gb ram, 6 battery, and MS Office installed, for $330.

The best deal was a $800 off coupon for a $1600 laptop. After config, it ended up being more powerful than my desktop, but I hesitated on pulling the trigger. I believe the coupon lasted for 1 hour.

The warranty is exactly the same as the new models have but it varies by model - see the product pages for the new models to see the warranty information for that model. You have the option of buying extra coverage too of course.

So.........I wound up doing the logical thing when choosing a new computer by getting completely hammered and ordering the first computer that seemed right at that particular drunken moment.

I decided I won't really travel with it as much as I initially thought I might, so I threw size out of the equation. Wound up ordering this.....woke up the next morning hungover with the pickup slip printed and sitting on my desk. It's more than I planned on spending, but I usually keep computers for 5-6 years easily, so it more than pays for itself in the end.

So far I'm happy with it....despite being an HP (I've always been a Dell guy)....more than suits my needs.:thumb:
