I remember when the PS2 and XBox were released people were selling the carton the consoles came in and people were bidding hundreds of dollars.

Nah, the guy is auctioning off his services - specifically, he'll go to your local best buy/circuit city/whatever, and camp out there, buy you an Xbox on release day and bring it to you.

MS is short shipping the console to raise hype by making sure every outlet sells out on release day. And all those were covered under the pre-orders.
