Anyone running late model XT cranks on their DH rig? I'm building up a new v10 and I'm looking to save some weight so I'm considering these. Any opinions? Too flexy? Can they handle drops? Long lasting durability? If i don't use these then I'm going with the Saints although they seem a bit too overbuilt for a race bike.

Wouldn't it have been more effective to make one thread titled, "Eggbeaters or XT cranks for DH???"

There was a thread about this not too long ago...

I don't remember what the end result was but I don't think they'll last forever unless you like your wheels stuck to the ground and you're not too heavy duty on them.

I've always used xc cranks on my DH bikes although not the new xts.

What are you a shimano whore? Get some hussefelts. Both of them weigh about as much as one saint crank.

You wanna save weight? Do it the smart way and just stand on your spindles.......it's like motocross. DH is all coasting anyway.

the holzfellers are a good bit lighter then the hussefelts. id just suggest holzfellers over the hussefelts.

in a single wide, cooking meth...
I've got XT's (the olde 752 Octalink) on my trailbike and those things flex like noodles...Plus, the BB creaks like hell - which is just splendid on a mono frame  3 piece BB's suk...

But I don't think they'll actually break anytime soon...Nevertheless, I would at least get the new 2 piece BB XT crankset...Or get the new Diabolus off a friend who can't get'em to fit on his VP-Free (thank god my buddy wasn't willing to get the facing tool out)

I typed hussefelts when I was thinking holzfellers. I'm stupid and should be spanked.

What do you want for yours?
PM me.

BTW the weight of the saints include the bottom bracket which the holzfellers does not. Trust me I've been comparing components for monthes now but I hadn;t even considered XT's until somebody suggested it to me.

"does Shimano even make a BB wide enought for the V10?"

well that's sort of an issue too. it'll work but it my not have the ideal chainline.
True, you need to be able to get that chain over into the spokes.

The only weight comparison I've done is with one saint crank in one hand and one holzfeller in the other. I tipped over and hit my head on the side holding the saint. With a gigapipe BB, are holzfellers anywhere near the weight of a saint setup? My highly scientific comparisons produced different uh.......numbers.

I'm running Xt 2-pieces on my DHR and I'm stoked with them. I can't notice any flex (I'm about 170lb though) and they're way lighter than Saints. There's squillions of cranks out there to choose from - FSA is supposed to be doing something with outboard bearings soon aren't they?

Marla ran XT's for a few races on her V10 and that has alot of people thinking that it is possible. With everything stock there is no way this can happen. She had a pretty heavily modified custom frame in order for this set up to work. Basically its not possible to do this.
