No, they won't shift if you're doing freeride or all mountain. You have to be specifically going up or going down for them to work. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

A better product is the Foes Weasel. They're pretty hard to find nowadays, but I sure would prefer to have one of those than an XTR derailleur.

... but only if you are running a "Durado." the dampening and brake dive built into the Durado combats the m951's tendency to jack the brake (similar to DW-Link AKA Horst Capacitor).

Need to know how good a xtr rapid rise rd-m951 rear derailure is for free ride and all mountain.
Is it a good product and whats a better product.
I found that the XTR M-9XX series all come as long cage for running triple ring in the front. This is great if you are running 3 cogs on the cranks. If you run a bash guard you don't need a long cage on the derailleur.

A short cage is best for freeriding, I have ripped enough derailleurs of my big bike (Scream)to realize that the closer the cage is to the ground the greater the chance of impact.

Right now I am using a road derailleur,
because it has a nice strong spring and a very short cage. Some people said that the short road cage would not push the chain into the big gear on the rear, but i have yet to have an issue. Mind you riding around here doesn't require alot of shiffting.

On my light duty bike (Giant AC) I have an XTR M-9XX, i would not replace it for any thing other then a sram. It shifts so crisp, you need that when attacking climbes.

If you want bike candy and just got to spend some money, nothing wrong with that!

Then look at one of these from sram

made to run on shimano 9 speed.

Sorry tassmen, it's quiet obvious that an Ultegra derailleur is a downhill unit, and would be incompatible with freeriding. The fact you installed one on your scream is currently causing major tectonic plate shift due to the world starting to spin backwards.

I love SRAM, and it looks like they are gone have a short cage version of X.0 next year.

Yup and now I have this urge to ditch the baggies and dawn a full skin suite :D I should also mention the leg shaving I had to do just to get that Ultegra mounted.
