Well, I went and did it. I bought an R1. I've been pining for one for the longest time. Let me tell you, crazy fast. Power wheelies like it's cool. I'm probably going to die pretty soon, all that power on a bike is not condusive to me living.

fill out your organ donation paperwork.

I know I'd kill myself on a rocket. My scooter's got more than enough power to cause trouble.

i love the r6/r1 line....but there's something about that v-twin purr :D

i mean, really.....both the R1 and RC51 have more power than any mortal could use. bikes are kind of like computers....if you get the latest and greatest fast thingy...a newer, faster one will be out to beat it in a year. so i'm just going to settle for a throaty 51 even thought that by the time i buy it it'll be comparitevely slow.

very stoked for you jorvik...enjoy! send me some nice knee-dragging pics

(am i a bad cop for telling a dude on zx-10R to "stand it up" on the freeway after i promised him i wouldn't pull him for it? :D)

WOW.
That think is GORGEOUS!
Make me really, really miss my 900ss. My next bike is gonna be less speed, more style. M900 hopefully. Need a new car first though, and to move, and....

That R1 is pretty sharp. I like that color scheme, tight but not super flashy. Here's my old duffer bike. '97 1200 Bandit with a few mods pumps out about 115 hp at the rear wheel with a bit more lower-back-friendly ergos. The old blue Bandit

Did you have a motorcycle before you got the R1?

Watch out and don't let some blind SUV driver take you out.

Don't anybody worry themselves about my riding. I've been riding street bikes for 5 years now. This bike has been long overdue. I've got the 02 liquid silver with some goodies on it, I'll get a pic up as soon as I can. I NEED a steering damper on it. I've been tank slapped so many damn times already, gosh. It's hard to look all cool when you pop yourself a little wheelie to 10:30, actually find the balance point, but then realize you need to start slowing down so you ease the front down, then thwack, there goes any thought of having children. You pull off highway, park the bike, walk a little bit into the grass, and lie down in the fetal position.

I'm both.

Lowside on my old CBR when I was in High School. Wasn't wearing protective gear except for a helmet. Just a long sleeve T and jeans. Couple bruises and a sprained ankle was all. The bike had some minor plastic damage, which surprized the hell out of me because it flipped over quite a few times when it hit the curb.

Also bumped in the side by a car who didn't look before they changed lanes on RT 2 in Concord. Lowside into the oncoming traffic, luckily there were only a couple cars who stopped well in time. Needed new plastics for the CBR. Not so much as a bruise, i was wearing my rainsuit with CE armor in it.

And it's going to happen again, I've been lucky so far.

i cringe when i see all these kids up here riding r1's and zx-10's....in shorts and a t-shirt. i want to scream and show them pics of my old crashes and others. i never rode w/out at least jeans and a leather jacket.
the dorks up here seem to think that extending the swingarm on just about any sportbike is the cool thing to do....i guess they don't realize that they just ruined everything that a sportbike is about  i laughed at a kid to his face last summer that had a 15" extension in his mid 90's Suzuki RF600.......that thing has like 80HP on a good day.

wow....unless you're ONLY drag-racing......what's the point?

D@mn Straight!!! Thank God, I have never crashed riding, but I did help scrap my cousin up from the pavement on Saturday. He rides an RC51, which is one of the torqueist bikes I've ever ridden, just touch the throttle and the front wheel is off the ground. He was ridding an insane wheelie, when he hit something in the rode, which caused him to grab a handful of throttle. The bike tumbled end over end until it came to rest in a ditch. Needles to say the bike is totaled. He came out of with a lot of road rash, and f'ed up custom painted helmet. However, it could have been a lot worse. :dead:

god damn. i've wanted an R6 since they were released in...97? 98? i'd settle for an R1, though. there's an 04 R1 here at school that requires a good masturbation session. i love the grey/silver scheme.

ah, i'm jealous.

Jorvik,

I hope you make decisons on the motorcycle better than you do around a tattoo needle. Bikes are great fun though, had a VFR800 for a few years but sold it after a few close calls with morons on cell phones.

That is a shame. They can teach you stuff, but they can't make you put it in practice I s'pose.

The thing is, that 90% of riders who buy a first bike will crash in the first year when untrained.

I guess I'm lucky, I've had 2 bikes, 5 or 6 years of riding and no crashes (its been a few years since i sold the last one)

I did have a dirt bike when I was a kid / I think having a dirt bike is a good idea/good way to learn how to ride

I took my first MSF course in 2002, did the advanced one in 03. Great courses, thought I knew everything before I took my first one. Didn't realized all the bad habits I had. Not going to take another one, my command isn't going to give me 2 days off to take a course that I already gave them proof of completing. They'll do that if you don't have your BRC card, but, hey, I do.

And the tattoo needle thing, Damn. It'd be pretty damn hard to be any stupider. I'm about a jackass when it comes to that tattoo. Damn.

Wow, in the interest of safety you'd think they'd be down with it.

You can take it on your own on a weekend though. It really is a good idea t refresh it every few years, especially if you have a new scoot.

Well, the way it works here is that if you buy a motorcycle, you can park it on base but you have to leave it there until you can get a DOD sticker on it. The requirements are a Motorcycle endorsement on your license, insurance, registration, and BRC card. If you don't have your BRC card they'll sign you up for the course and you'll get out of work and everything to take it. If you've already got your BRC they just give you the DOD.

Honestly, I'm not that interested in taking another MSF course. As I've said already I've already taken 2. I'd rather take that money and spend it on a racing course.
