That's impossible your kid will never grow up to be an Indian because i won't have anything to do with your wife.

what about a drunk indian in Arizona casino party? we were told many times this past summer that riding through Arizona was going to be dangerous because it has the highest population of drunk drivers; indians on their reservations. luckly we didn't run into any, but damn, them boys sure know how to throw bottles.
WTF does this have to do with the subject at hand? Is this your view of Indians? As littering drunk drivers? Sounds like you need the class.... but i suspect it would probably bounce off your thick skull....

That's not nice skooks. I truly didn't know what to think when I went to the Big Hole Battlefield and just stood there. Standing where they launched a cannon attack on sleeping Indians. They killed mostly women and children and thought it was ok since it was their job. I believe I was, right then, at the low point of what I think humanity is worth. I think peeps that really haven't been exposed to a true event don't understand. I guess ignorance truly is bliss. People are kind of mean and bad by nature I think. :(

We do have good steak though. But, so does Montana. :)

westy, i'm appalled by the idea of a pimps and hookers party. that is absolutely demoralizing to women.

Loco, you're a tool, but your heart is in the right place most the time. I look at things like this: Can you name a race that has not been the object of a massacre at some point? Can you name a race that has not conducted a massacre at some point? People are ****s, but that's all people. Why get offedded by past human nature when we're all humans and all capable of the same things? Now, I could be wrong here, but I dont think the indians just sat around playing backgammon before the white man arrived. They had inter-tribal wars over food and land and other things all the time. What was unfair is the technological advantage of "civilized" settlers, but it is still history. If it had happened ANY other way, the world would not be the same place and many of us might not even exist. How can you hate something in history that defined the world? Do i hate the holocaust because Im polish? No. Not at all. Its just a piece of my family's history.

I don't hate the piece of history. Like I said, these peeps wre ambushed during sleep in many cases. It is big of you to not hate the Holocaust. I do. I just don't think a bunch of folks think before they say something that may truly be that sensitive. It's just common respect. I dislike that we are expected to learn spanish to coexist with foreigners in my own state. I do not, however, go throwing around things to make Mexican people mad. Why??? Because I respect them. I wish that we could all reciprocate and we would be a whole lot better off.

BTW - get ready to ignore me or learn to like be, because of lack of respect, I have all but given up on bikemojo. I can concentrate all of my efforts to spread love here.

bah! it's starting to get fun. it's all tongue-in-cheek, anyway. skooks said it best when he said "You know what i'm suprised the most about? Is that someone in Texas would actually be offended by anything...." that's one thing i really do not like about UT. someone will get pissed off at anything you do. i'm sure some Young Coversative of Texas is throwing a ****-fit about the "coming out" day yesterday. you know, just let it go. much better things to do than get all huffy puffy about this kind of stuff.

oh, and dude...Mojo is getting rediculous.

Here's what I think:

You can be busy getting mad at everything in life that can be construed as offensive. That's one way to live. It means you're going to be mad a great deal of the time, and you're going to spend a whole lot of your energy yelling at people, discussing things with them, complaining or bitching, and generally being unhappy. Many of the "offensive" things people say or do are not intended to be so. Perhaps they should be enlightened as to the possible implications of what they've done, but many of these people have their hearts in the right place.

OR, you can just get mad at things that are intended to be offensive.

This party was not intended to be offensive. They needed a costume theme, and "cowboys and indians" has somewhat transcended its bloody origins to become a cultural symbol. There is a stereotypical image of a cowboy and an indian, and the two "cultures" have been intertwined forever (alright, I realize that "cowboy" isn't exactly a culture; anybody can be a cowboy, but the stereotype is a culture of sorts). That makes it an excellent theme for a party - everyone knows what they should look like and act like to fit their "role".

Sure, there is a horrible history there, but save the energy for those who actually intend for their comments to be offensive. Otherwise, you just waste a lot of time and effort on people who had the best of intentions and simply weren't aware of the implications of what they were doing.

Why do you assume the hookers are women? Come awn, dude, you DO live in Austin don't you?

Hey Skooks: GO REDSKINS! There are TWO freakin' Cowboys vs Redskins parties this year. Just kidding, man. I have to be loyal to my neighbors and root for Dallas. Now, if they beat the Steelers I'll be crushed. . . The historical irony of big white rednecks romping on poor, laid-off steelworkers would be too much for me to stomach.

BS has a point: people are animals. People kill people. Anglos destroyed entire nations of those who were here before. Comanches killed, raped, and kidnapped other natives as well as whites, right up the road from where Loco lives. They killed women and children. Along the same trails, nasty drunk whites and well-meaning fathers and husbands killed peace-loving natives and Comanche alike. They killed women and children. I feel no need to defend any of these people, or condemn them, for what they did. It was 140 yrs ago. I wasn't there.

Like any other injustice, it happened. I can't change that, but I learned from it. For those who haven't learned, protesting their stupid party theme will not help. Staging a seething, hateful campaing against some students for being insensitive is a waste of time, energy, and conviction. It won't teach them a thing, and will most likely steel their reserve against any other PC bullcrap they encounter. Feel empathy for those who suffered and died? Do something to help their descendants. Hundreds of organizations exist to channel your time, energy, and money. Preaching to drunk students won't feed a starving kid or help someone overcome an addiction.

But it'll get your name in the Daily Texan, and I bet that's what it's really all about.

It's only offensive if you want it to be. I became a much happier person when I realized that.

Years ago I told my mother that she hurt my feelings. She said "no I didn't, you hurt your own feelings".

So using that logic you can justify any action based on being able to control your emotions. Kind of like i can walk downtown and start being ignorant, yell racial crap, get punched in the nose and say "hey man i've got my feelings in check why don't you? You're wrong man learn how to control your reactions man!" But then i would be guilty of being shocked and upset at being punched in the nose too.....
Having emotional knowledge and being able to control your action or reaction has little to do with this topic. But i'm glad you do realize that part of the spectrum of emotional balance not many people in this world have a handle on or even a clue about.....
My main question was knowing what i know, why should i think it's funny? And nobody answered me, i just read that i should just lighten up essentially. As if i wasn't with my goofy posting.....
Well sure it's not like i'm enraged about the party, disapointed and resigned yes suprised no. But what really i find interesting in all this, is the resistance for seeing an alternative point of view perhaps worthy of respect, and it being so threatening, just so some college kids can have a stupid party. So much frustration when i argue that hey maybe these kids were really in the wrong and need to be slapped on the wrist.... In the context they are a fraternity who are supposed to be representing their university. Also in the context that the girl in her own slightly blurbed comment, connotated more offensive stuff was going down.
Headress and garb is not looked favorably by Indians when worn at a party, or football game or wherever unless it's real and it's within a ceremony. But knowing that will not change how things are, just like the Redskins will never change their name, believe me there's tons of ignorant stuff about Indians floating around... i'm fair skinned and people who initially meet me don't know i'm almost 1/2 blood and a tribal member, and i have immediate Indian family i see alot, not some great great grandfather i have never met.... So being light skinned i get the brunt of all the inside racist jokes by fellow light skinned people i run into on my journeys. So you can't fool me, i know we don't live in a racist free world sorry.... alot better than than a hundred years ago yes, but still...
i understand that political correctness is annoying, especially when it's misdirected, i've had a white woman tell me to address myself as a native american and not an Indian.....
but i've also delivered an auto part to a shop and was waiting for a slip. While i was waiting there was a black applicant trying to get a job there. He left and when the gal came back she confided that there was no way that individual was going to get a job at that shop.
Y'know, i listen to alot of stories from my grandmother. She's the last adult figure left in my life everyone else is gone. And i listen to her stories about life and i've learned how much $hit she had to take from people because she is Indian. So that's pretty much it, not like i'm gonna change your mind about it, but i'm gonna tell you where i stand..... so deal.

If you don't want to find it funny, then don't. You feel however you want to feel about it.

FYI, playing cowboys and indians as a kid, for some reason I never thought about the political correctness of it, it was just playing. Mabye that was the jest of the party. Something a lot of people did as kids, and it brought back a lot of fond memories.

Or...they they were all too drunk and stoned watching Pee Wees play house, and that's what he was doing, so they took off with it.

My moms side of the family is Italian, and so is ALL of my wife's family. Would I be offended, or anyone else in my family, if my neighbors decided to have a Soprano party?

No I wouldn't, cause I don't want to.

And the rest of the family acts like they are in the mob anyway...yeah right :D
