YESSSSS!!!!! (unemployment compensation PAID!!!)

Old_Dude

I was shocked to find $900 had been direct-deposited to my checking account - the result of three weeks worth of unemployment compensation. I'm going to get $300/week until it runs out at $5700.

WOO HOO!!!

And I actually deserve it too - the Department of Labor had a big, ongoing investigation to verify why I was terminated and qualified to receive unemployment compensation. I wrote the DOL a 1 1/2 page letter explaining the details, showed them the discharge letter they forced me to sign & blah, blah, blah. I won & they're paying me!!!

So - wow!

And, there's NO WAY possible I'm gonna find a job in this area that I qualify for, but of course, I'll keep trying (Industrial Designer with expert Pro/ENGINEER skills).

So - wow!!! Like, I'm really diggin' this.

It is my utmost hope that my former employer will have to somehow pay for their mistake of letting me go for no valid reason. Where is the money I'm receiving now coming from - does anyone know? I'm assuming it's the $ the company paid while I was an employee - sort of like an insurance policy? Anyone know the details or a link that explains this stuff?

Happy riding,

OD

congrats, i guess.

in ca, employers typically pay into the unemployment compensation fund based on a percentage of their employees' wages, up to $7,000. the percentage is based on several things, two of which i'm familiar with, the number of employees that have filed for unemployment with that company, and the overall health of the unemployment compensation fund. (whew, that was a long sentence). more people filing for unemployment in a given state will rise in order to make sure the fund doesn't go bankrupt. ca's unemployment, disability and workers' comp funds are screwed; more people are filing for this sh1t than ever (and guess how many people deserve it and don't abuse it). in reality unemployment's not bad, you get money back that you never paid one cent towards.

true true, but the rational for this argument is kinda overdone. if some employers provided medical insurance, couldn't they just not provide that benefit and pay me more? okay, med is optional and unempl isn't, but you get the jist (sp?). in reality, everything we do in society contributes to higher prices and lower wages, it's just that the transition and increases are very small and prolonged (higher oil prices affect EVERYTHING).

Well, sure. In fact, you can negotiate this. If you're covered by a spouse's plan, I would encourage you to negotiate a higher salary.......

I mean, we do this all the time with short/long term disability and other stuff - why should unemployement be any different? Wouldn't it be nice to opt out and get paid more and cover unemployement yourself?

OD - have you ever held a job for more than 6 months? This seems to be a serious problem for you. I only mention it because you have had about 9 jobs over the last 2 1/2 years and each occupation was totally unrelated to the last...

I think you are bull shi tting us once again - please give me access to your on-line bank records so that I can verify your current story. :)

Hey, it's been tough for me, but I'm not the only one. Why don't you go do a Monster-dot-com search for people who have Pro/ENGINEER experience, then find out that 95% of those jobs require an ME degree. My degree is in Industrial Design and I haven't had any experience in that field since '89 when I started my consulting/contracting business.

I'm not complaining - it was my choice to become an Industrial Designer and then go into something else. Teaching Pro/E was a fantastic job - it paid well (over $100K/year) but who wants to hire someone with three years of ID experience that took place over 13 years ago but who knows Pro/E very well but hasn't used it in a professional setting?

Yeah, the word looser, comes to my mind too.

I can post the letter from DOL if you'd like, but I feel kinda strange giving my bank account info - maybe for that I could PM you instead?

And, of course, I'll be the first to admit your speculation is very well justified. I doubt anyone will believe the new me.

And that's no big deal.

Happy riding,

Sure - if you have any credit card accounts you want me to look into please include the numbers and expiry dates as well. THanks a bunch... :thumb:

Anyhow you don't need to tell me how crappy the the job market is - as an idependent contractor I don't qualify for any employment security benys.
