I was on a race yesterday and I have a question about fair yielding. I was riding down single track and approaching a rider, I caught the rider on the DH and was trying to make a pass. I called out "rider up" he didn't reply until I asked several times can I pass, as not to endanger him. His reply was no you can't pass here, during these times there were places a pass would have been fair, safe, and ok to do but I was hesitant because there was no communication. I know we yield to uphill cyclists but who has the right in the downhill?

Depending on the race format and governing body a person may be required to yield to a passing rider. Refusal to yield can result in a DSQ if a complaint is filed with a race official in certain circumstances.

The person who isn't a d*ck? Sounds like that guy was a d*ck.

We were coming down the long super-G type type descent (working your way from 7K down to 5K) during the 50 mile WOR race in Prescott last year and there was that one guy who thinks they are a great descender, holding up about 10-15 riders that want to actually go fast. You try to be nice about it at first, but some people are just d*cks. Get the f*ck out of the way.

You've been caught, get the fuck out of the way. The phrase I preferred was "you already lost, get the fuck out of the way". If that doesn't work "get the fuck out of the way or I'm passing". If that doesn't work, "PASSING!" and shove by.

It's shit like this that turns me off racing. He should have yielded and let you pass, especially after you asked nicely and tried to be patient. Sure it's a race, but it's not like it was World Champs or something and his pro contract for next year was on the line.

But FYI "rider up" means there's someone ahead on the trail (usually coming toward you, but not always). If you're behind someone you are the "rider back".

given this is PSP, i'd wager he's talking about XC racing not DH. In XC racing, i don't believe you are required to yield (unlike DH).

I don't care. Again, we're not talking about World Champs. If someone is faster than you, let them pass. Otherwise you're creating a dangerous situation and should be ready to get shoved into the woods. By the same token, if that guy then catches you on the next climb, let him pass. It's playing with bikes in the woods, be a good sport.
