A local Cyclist died recently here in Richmond, VA

Dear cycling friends,

I am saddened to inform you that David Smith died this morning as a result of severe brain trauma sustained in a cycling accident on August 20th. It was only my second time riding with him, but in that short time I learned that he was a heck of a nice man. His wife Sharon and son Michael were on the ride as well. David was 40 years old. I believe he was a RABA member.

David died in such a way that his organs were able to be harvested and will be used to help others. That is a remarkable gift and a true blessing.

Lesson: David crashed descending Old Gun Road in Midlothian, trying to catch up to the lead group (me). His wife is the only person who witnessed the crash. He had left her and was out of his saddle when the chain skipped on either the chain ring or cassette. The sudden unloading of the cranks threw him forward and over the bars. He landed on the pavement helmet first on his forehead, fracturing his skull in several places and sustaining severe brain injuries. He was airlifted to MCV where he remained in a coma in the Neuro ICU until his death.

I want to do something to help his family. Either a memorial ride or just set up a means by which monetary donations can be received. They are going to have some financial challenges with the removal of his income and paying off medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Please keep his family in your prayers. I have attached a photo of David and Sharon that was taken in 2004.

Best regards,

Chris
What a terrible freak accident. I didn't really know him, just in passing in the shop I work at. a lot of locals rode with him a lot, it's really shaken up the cycling community here.

Stay safe out there guys, and live everyday like its your last
