Indian navy sinks suspected pirate "mother" ship

NEW DELHI – An Indian naval vessel sank a suspected pirate "mother ship" in the Gulf of Aden and chased two attack boats into the night, officials said Wednesday, yet more violence in the lawless seas where brigands are becoming bolder and more violent.
Man, why couldn't they have done cool stuff like that when I was in the Navy? Chasing pirates would be bad ass!

If they blow that thing up the ecological disaster will make Prince William Sound (Exxon Valdez) look like a spill on your garage floor...

ecological disaster? it hasn't been refined/processed yet, right? so they take it from from the ground & put it in the water. ain't like it's drinking water. so it kills a few trillion krill in primary feeding grounds of many dependent species in the food chain.

oh...

I'd like to see exactly how a handful of Somali's in some crappy little boat and a few guns are able to stop a friggin' super tanker. It must have been a sight to see.

I am AF...we only wear stuff like that on "special" days...

What I dont get is why/how a supertanker is overtaken like that...why dont they just run the smaller boat over? The tanker seems like a stable firing platform...a rifle squad could defend it rather easily...

There are only 20 ish crew on that big ass boat the size of 4 aircraft carriers.

Pretty easy mark if you ask me.

Ever think the Saudis paid the pirates to hijack the tanker in a bid to help jack the price of oil back up by creating a panic? :pirate2:

the nytimes coverage of the hijacking mentioned that commercial shipping companies do not use escorts or armed crewmen because they don't wish to escalate conflicts and end up with dead crewmen in the crossfire. 1 million barrels hijacked out of what, 70 million per day is nothing.

I guess it depends on the pirates.

When we did our sea trials after the yards, 2 SEAL attack boats with 12 dudes beat the piss out of an AEGIS CG with 325 blokes. Good thing they are ultimately on our side, or it could have been ugly.

Well, those are SEALs, not Somali pirates. I would think they are a little bit better trained and equipped then a bunch of Somali teenagers with attitudes...

Defending oil tankers sounds like a perfect job for Blackwater, now that Iraq will be drying up for them.

Good point, my office mate and I were just talking about the cost/benefit ratio of taking it back...

I would let them have it, after an effort to gain the crews release, and let the insurance carriers worry about recovering the ship and cargo.

Ah, he's getting older and was mainly explaining the talking head's question about how a few Somalis could take over a big tanker. Dickie patiently explained about crew sizes on tankers and how they're not armed.

Told a few tales about Seal Team 6 and how they did it back in the day. then made a reference as to how gov't would screw it up trying to take it back (obscure reference to Tehran rescue attempt)

I say send him, Ted Nugent and Chuck Norris to deal with the pirates.

The Navy doesn't do anything involving the word "ass" after the whole Tailhook thing.
