Alright, let me first say that I was a big Lance Armstrong fan, he was an inspirational rider and a total animal who never gave up despite some wicked odds against him. But he won his last race, and retired to spend time with his kids and find a cure for cancer. Yet, I open up my wifes People rag (Sitting on the crapper...) and there he is. I turn on ESPN, and there he is on my Sportscenter. Lance, GO AWAY. You are retired, so go be retired. Take a few bucks, buy a little fishing boat and go catch some large mouth. Quit being a media whore, because your only real talent is riding a bike. You walked away, now stay away. No one cares about you, off the bike. (Okay, so there is the cancer fund raising thing. Keep doing that.) Dont wreck your legacy, because it is only a matter of time before you do something really stupid, like get a DUI, or another high profile brush with the law, or date another quasi celebrity who will write a tell all book about your strange fetishes or addictions. And there are those who would delight in your failing. Dont give them the satisfaction.
Go away, and re-appear at TDF celebrations, or local bike races where you can crown winners and pimp the foundation. Find a cave, whatever. Just go away.
And oh yeah, Eddy Merckx was way better.

Do you realize that almost every athlete who spends a significant amount of time at the top of his/her sport remains a celebrity long after they have retired?

Muhammed Ali
Michael Jordan
Mario Andretti
Wayne Gretzky
Just about every pro football commentator
Tonya Harding :D

Don't have time to make the list longer but you get the idea...

Please...
Ali became a celebrity because of his personality, LA has the charisma of a wet sponge. Jordan has stayed out of the limelight for the most part, as has Gretzky (other than his wifes gambling fiasco last year, only hockey fans really know what he is up to). Andretti? Other than raising racers, he has done a cartoon voice.
Okay, Tanya Harding, sure. But she is so, so, trailer park trash, how could she not be a celebrity...

I have no idea how sincere Lance Armstrong is, but I have heard him say that he is using his celebrity status to continue to raise money for cancer research. Maybe you should tell the 10 year old bald girl that there is not gonna be a cure for her because you don't want Lance to ruin his reputation by making bad jokes on Letterman.

Exactly.

Lance isnt just famous because he was a bike racer. He's loved because he beat what looked like terminal cancer and he serves as a beacon of hope to ALOT of sick people. A little asinine to wish him gone IMO.

Which all the nothingness that fills up the tube wouldn't you rather see Lance talking about something or nothing, then some person you know nothing about or have nothing in common with?

Why ya gotta hate?

The media just blows everything out of proportion anyway. Now if you will excuse me I need to check out ESPN.com for the hourly TO finger update...... OK I'm back, it is still broken.

I saw a 5 second clip of Lance running around Queens in preparation for the NYC Marathon.

That's a media splurge...

I am not a hater, though I am not real fond of people who accuse others of hating.
If you read the post, you would possibly have inferred that I respect LA and his work, and simply am tired of seeing him on the idiot box and in the rags. Had you the IQ of a shop rag, that is.
As far as the LA foundation goes, well, thats great. My Mum just died from cancer, and there wasnt a d@mn thing LA could have done to help her. Actually, I find the whole bit somewhat self serving. How much interest would he have in finding a cure had he never suffered from cancer? Probably about as much as OJ has in finding his wives killers...

Sorry for you're loss - and you right he might not care about cancer at all had he not lived it. But isn't that what life’s about becoming a better person and growing from your experiences.

Putting Lance and OJ in the same thread is just flat out wrong.

I too am sorry for your loss, and I'm also astounded that you would say anything negative about his cancer-related activities. I mean, come on, he might help someone else's mother live a little longer. Self-serving or not, he's doing a hell of a lot more for cancer research than people with a lot more money and ability to help.

Seriously...I mean, how much money/time do you devote to Parkinsons or diabetes or AIDS research? I give about nothing...but if I were a multi-gazillionaire and had any of those, I'd probably change my tune.

Lance, like anyone else, is (mostly) human.

And, furthermore, criticizing someone by saying "oh, if they didn't have this disease, they would do nothing" is totally bogus because Lance DID have cancer. What he might have done otherwise is irrelevant.
