Hiker loses eye in mountain lion attack
Sunday, June 27, 2004 Posted: 8:33 PM EDT (0033 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A woman was attacked by a mountain lion while hiking in central California, but was rescued when her friends stabbed the animal with a knife and threw rocks at it, officials said.

Shannon Parker lost her right eye, was injured in her other eye and suffered deep lacerations to her right thigh during the attack Saturday, officials with the California Department of Fish and Game said.

Parker, 27, of Santa Monica, was transferred to UCLA Medical Center, where she underwent reconstructive surgery Sunday morning, Game and Fish spokesman Steve Martarano said.

Parker's family asked UCLA not to release her condition, hospital spokeswoman Rachel Shampeau said.

Authorities said Parker was hiking with three male friends about 20 miles north of Kernville when the 70-pound female lion attacked her, Martarano said. The lion ran off after Parker's friends stabbed it and threw rocks at it.

The lion left a bloody trail as it fled, and was later shot and killed by U.S. Forest Service officers and state game wardens, Martarano said.

The lion "appeared to be emaciated" and officials will do a necropsy Monday to determine whether it was sick or injured, Martarano said.

A 2002 wildfire in the area may have hampered the lion's ability to find enough food, he said.

"Before the fire, (the area) was considered moderate to good mountain lion and deer habitat. The fire changed everything," but the area had recently started to revive, Martarano said.

He said the incident was the 15th mountain lion attack on a human in California since 1890.

In January, a mountain lion killed a cyclist and mauled another near Los Angeles.

Wow - I've ridden up and around in Kernville a few times. That is definitely wild animal territory. Last time I saw 5 bears!!!

I can't believe they're now attacking riders in groups. Probably the lion jumped the smallest one in the group, but that's nuts that beyond her own defensive efforts, it'd take three men with rocks and one with a knife to repel it. Good thing one of the guys stabbed it, thereby creating a trail for the authorities to follow.

Well if you think about it...cats are so freaking strong...even just a kitty cat...there is no way in hell that two grown people could hold my cat down for a bath...she'd tear you up...she's 16 years old and still scales a 7 foot fence like its nothing...and that's just a 12 pound domesticated pet...imagine a wild starving 70 pound cat...I shudder...

From what I understand from watching the local news here in L.A. the woman strayed away from her group, and that was when the lion attacked her. (I could be wrong though) Now to me the scary thing is that the lion waited until one of them was alone. Like it was hunting them.

On my ride yesterday i saw a skinny methhead skinny ass biker dude (like in Harley motorbike dude) in the backwoods with a Rotweiler. That Rotty was in attack mode and the biker dude was using all of his strength to hold it back. If he would have slipped that big ole dog would have taken chunks out of me.

Criminal human makin his big doggie mean....

Your situation in California is Californians own fault in my opinion. From what i understand from my limited knowledge last years fires could have been prevented but environmental laws reduced preventative burning for air quality issues, and also i believe it's against the law to hunt cougar now in the state, how sad.... Cougars need to have alot of space to hunt, now all the land is charred and barren. Until the grass grows and the deer get fat your gonna have hungry kitty cats gobbling up nasty smelling humans, Californians should endevor to keep city folk from meddling into the affairs of the management of nature.

Ignorant people creating an unsafe intolerable environment in the name of protecting the environment.

I reiterate i fear the human animal far more than i fear any other animal.
