I haven't been around lately and didn't go through the 8,006 new posts since I last visited so maybe this was already posted.

From cyclingnews:

Mountain bike endurance specialist Tinker Juarez was robbed at gunpoint of his road bike and cell phone a couple of weeks ago, according to sources at his sponsor Cannondale.

Juarez, 43, the reigning US 24 Hours of Adrenalin champion and one of the most popular riders on the cross-country circuit for his longevity as a pro and friendliness, was riding one of his usual training loops from his Downey, California home. His route included a stretch of the bike path alongside the concrete-paved Los Angeles River. "A work-crew was re-paving a section and had put a detour that sent you on to the city streets," Juarez explained. Unfortunately, those city streets were in one of the roughest areas of North Long Beach. "I had stopped at this park for minute to get water, figure out how to continue my ride, and to change the music in my Walkman, when I felt a tap on my shoulder." Juarez turned to see a gun pointed at his face. The gunman demanded Juarez's Cannondale Six13road bike and his cell phone.

"I don't think the guy has any idea of what he has," Juarez observed, "When he rode off you could see he didn't know how to ride it - he wobbled off with it still in a big gear." Juarez surmises that his $5800 bike was "probably traded for a $50 bag of whatever."

The key to riding in a bad neighborhood is to NEVER STOP. Especially if you are geeked out and smuggling plums. Stranded in a bad neighborhood wearing little more than plastic soled shoes and underwear is a very bad thing.

Yah, I had to stop in a bad neighborhood once and it scared the hell out of me. I was changing my tire after flatting when running over a crack vile!

Thank God he didn't get shot.... giving up your bike and cell are small things when it comes to your life! We all would have missed him...

If I'm riding alone, I always have some kind of weapon of mass destruction on me.........Part of my commute goes through the city, so I won't take any chances. The only time I wasn't prepared, some sicko waited til I got right next to him.........and proceeded to drop his pants and wack off. If I had my pepper foam that day, I could've whipped up a sausage sundae.

No frikkin doubt. WHat was Tinker thinking... "hey, looks like I'll be riding through the hood today"

He should have turned around or taken another route, or like Westy said, at least not stopped.

so "glad" this sort of thing doesn't only happen in South Africa, guys are always getting mugged for cell phones and bikes.

I like how he comments on the guy's riding style when he's off with his bike.

Ever seen the movie human nature? If not watch it, it's a fine movie with one scene in which you will relate and most likely laught really hard as I did. Seriously rent it next time your at the video store, its phuking great.

:thumb: :thumb:

On a serious note, my ex-GF had a dude walk up to the balcony watching her read a book (fully clothed in 45-50 degree weather mind you) and whip it out and start going at it... right there in the middle of the apartment complex . She said she almost puked right then and there.

WTF is with these people? Who whips it out and starts beating it in broad daylight in public? For god's sake people, crouch behind a dumpster like the rest of us  :monkey:

Bad karma to bike thieves, especially when upon Tinker. :nope:
Slightly off-topic, but when one of our buddies didn't have a lock, he used to park his bike in plain sight wherever he had to go inside. Plus he used to put it in the highest gear and crank down his front and rear Avid mechs. The rest of us used to sit there and hope some idiot would come by and try to ride away with it. It would easy to jump out and kick his dumbazz while he's on the ground writhing and holding his pulled calf muscles. :D

Well, from what I understand Tinker grew up in Downey so he has probably ridden through the bad neighborhoods before. Downey itself has some nice areas, but like many places in L.A. it has some baaaaad areas surrounding it. Living in L.A. you learn either 1) How to go through them. (You DON'T stop!) or 2) how to avoid them. Personally, I avoid them at all costs.

Still sucks though. Tinker is one of the nicest guys out there. I ran into him once on the trail, he was super nice, taking time to chat with my friend and I while we asked him all sorts of dumb questions. It really is bad karma to rob him. Thank God he wasn't shot!

He still is "King Big Ring"!

If he lives in Downey, then he LIVES in the hood.

Coincidently enough, I was working at a mortgage company in longbeach (near Downey) when I got a lead for a guy that wanted to Refi.

His name was Tinker Juarez. :thumb:
I called and left a few messages, but he never called back.

ummmm...he's probably pissed that some pussy a$$ gansta byatch put a gun to his head! Damn that would piss me off! Tinker could have kicked his a$$ if no weapons were involved. Did I mention I can't stand pussies who hide behind guns and steal $hit?

I am glad Tinker's OK, he's one of my pre-teen heroes!

Another theft deterrent- Ride a fixed gear. When the thief hops on, they'll turn their head to look back to see if their safe, so when they try to coast, WHAM! Mouth full of asphalt... Some day, I'll set up a little trap like this. And I'll get some pics for the monkey. Just don't count on it any time soon.

EDIT: typo

Yeah, I guess he does live in the hood... I was tryin to be nice to all the Downey residents who may be reading this.

I once heard that Tinkers real name is David. He used to race BMX waaaaay back in the day. Anyone know if this is true?
