a good friend of mine has 1500 lazy bones to drop on a DJ / all rounder hardtail... what do you guys recommend... preferabally a pre-built bike, not a frame and custom parts build...

Specialized P.3 is very nicly speced HT and i think they are around $1300usd

IH Yakuza HT's seem to be more toward the "all-rounder" end of the spectrum, but they're pretty sweet for the $$. Supergo has 'em cheap. Also:

Devinci Hucker, etc. -
Norco Shore hardtails and Supercross hardtails -
New Commencal bikes - more available in Europe?

If it were me, I'd try to decide what kind of riding I'd most be doing:
Allround/FR/trail riding - Iron Horse
Street and DJ's - New Commencal or Felt
Compromise - Giant STP, Kona, IH

the P.3 is definatly a solid choose. super good specs and look killer too. I dont think you can go wrong with it

Did you mean all-rounder as is xc/trail bike too? Do you need a front derailleur? If so I suggest a Chameleon, super versatile.
