Heard it on a sports broadcast this morning. The report cited 3 un-named sources. MLB is apparently so shocked that they don't know what to do. So far they are not releasing names, but 2 are rumored to be bigger players than Palmero. I think they said the report is to come out in the next issue of SI. WTF is wrong with them?!? Or maybe I shouldn't ask that-the list seems to be long.

I read an article at the Boston Herald's website this morning that says the same thing. I'm really interested to see who they are.

Apparently no Red Sox have tested positive, so that's cool. :)

Cycling used have a casual attitude towards juicing (particularily EPO). When the entire Festina team was disqualified from the Tour, riders complained but there are fewer dopers. Once in a while, a guy like David Millar gets busted though.

I am sure the same will happen with MLB: indignation by the players then compliance.

I heard it on WAAF and they seem to get most/all of their info from the Herald.

Its the arrogance that surprises me, not the deed.

seriously, at this point, why would any of these guys ingest ANYTHING? a lot of them are saying they are getting nailed for OTC supplements they are taking, which is believable, however, why risk it? just dont take anything!

Palmeiro said he took steroids unknowingly, but the 'roid he took (Winstrol) can only be taken by injection. I.E., he is lying schmuck. From what I understand, OTC supplements (creatine and the like) are not banned.

I guess you could call it arrogance, but it seems more like complete and utter stupidity. And I wont even get started on the steroid penalty. 10 games is a freakin' joke.

I agree. All of a sudden, we had guys pushing 40 [cough] McGwire [/cough] that are twice the size they were at 20, and hitting 2 or 3 times more home runs.

Plus, it wasn't even against the rules until very recently.

I cannot wait to see what kind of payroll they will be fielding with a 40 man roster. Isn't their luxury tax already more than the Devil Rays entire payroll?

I think the expanded roster is already included in the team salary structure. YES to your question...the Yanks pay more in luxury tax that the Devil Rays pay in team salary.

Winstrol can be taken orally or through injection. It doesn't look like an aspirin, vitamin or come in a supplement powder though, so his "I didn't know" claim is crap. Palmeiro is a lying sack of sh!t.

BONDS. His hat size went up 4 sizes in one year.

I'd like to see this list or the article. I can't seem to find one.

What is the policy on timing between a positive test and when they would be suspended? I tried to find it but couldn't.

Seems to me that these people would be suspended long before SI could publish the story...

Oh yeah, and does anyone actually think this will ever go away? Unless a large portions of the fans stopped attending, watching, and buying merchandise - it's not going away.

I forget who it was, but one site had a poll about steroids - the last questions summed it up perfectly. It was (and this is from memory not a quote) - If you could make millions a year in the majors instead of $100,000 in the minors, would you take steroids?

Nothng has been announced. Here is the Boston Hearld article I read:

One big mess! Baseball rife with word of more positive tests
By Howard Bryant
Recent Columns by Howard Bryant
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - Updated: 01:30 AM EST

Before last week's Red Sox-Royals finale, a Royals player, who shall remain nameless, sat in the Kansas City dugout staring straight ahead squinting against the early afternoon sun. The topic was Rafael Palmeiro, whose 10-game suspension for violating the league's steroid policy expires tomorrow.

"Forget Palmeiro," the player said. "Be on the lookout for more. There are more names coming. Trust me."

The television executive whose network is a rights holder of Major League Baseball said last Friday that baseball had the names of as many as a dozen positive steroid tests that it was withholding from the public, unsure in the wake of the Palmeiro disaster exactly how to proceed.

Three days later, before Monday's 11-6 Sox win over Texas, a Red Sox pitcher heard the same thing, which reminded me of the words, "the rumors are always true," a classic line in Robert Altman's 1992 film "The Player."

"We're all hearing the same thing," the player said, noting that leading up to the Palmeiro announcement word had floated for days that "somebody big" was going down. "I heard they had 58 names they weren't releasing. I also heard that at least two were bigger than Palmeiro."

Later that afternoon, a former executive told me he had heard the talk recently, too, but the number is closer to 50 than 58.

Baseball executives say the rumors are not true, that the talk is cheap, more grist for the messy rumor mill. Baseball officials say there is no intrigue.

Yet this is the tale being spun around clubhouses in Major League Baseball, emblematic of the odd and suspicious environment that exists around the game right now.

The season itself is powered by Old Faithful – the wondrous game itself – and the power of baseball alone is preventing the season from turning into one big mess. But internally, teams are angry at the way the steroid process has unfolded.

The Red Sox are livid – less so now because Baltimore has fallen out of the race – that Palmeiro was allowed to play against them in the four-game series before the All-Star break. Imagine the games where Palmeiro demolished the Red Sox affecting the pennant race. Sox officials remain quiet on the subject, however, lest they give the appearance of sour grapes.

An Oakland executive not named Beane was frustrated, leaning toward believing the rumors. "If they knew about Palmeiro since May," the executive said, "what's to say they aren't sitting on more names?"

Players now sympathize with Juan Rincon, the Twins pitcher who was suspended for 10 games without appeal. Three months after his suspension, having already forfeited games and salary, Rincon's appeal is now being heard. Players want to know if they are being set up by the league in this political wrestling match to prove it is not soft on drugs. The leak that Palmeiro used the powerful steroid stanozolol, players believe, came from Park Avenue.

Twins officials aren't happy, either, for had Rincon been allowed to play while his appeal was being heard – as was the case with Palmeiro – he might have helped them chalk up a few more wins, something the Twins desperately need as they fade from the playoff race. Rincon has been told if his appeal is upheld he will have his service time reinstated. League officials haven't, however, told him how he will reclaim his name.

It's about two months between the time a player tests positive and the time it becomes official. They have a rediculous appeal process that drags things out. Palmeiro tested positive in late May and was not suspended until August.

Interesting article on ESPN.com on the double standard of cheating in MLB. People don't demonize pitchers for spit/vaseline/scuffed balls but the steroid users are getting slammed. To me cheating via steroids is much worse, whether they like it or not kids look up to these meat heads and will do what they do. Cheating by spitting on a ball turns a kid into an asshole. Having them use steroids could kill them or undermine their health.

I wonder if some unbanned substance is creating all of these positive tests. For example andro. When it was legal a tested person could show a positive test result because the andro would create increased levels of testosterone.

Just a thought on the subject.

if you aint cheating...you aint trying.

Using a spit ball is sooo much different than juicing up. Ahh i long for the old days of trying to hide an emory board.

I remember in highschool there was a pitcher who got tossed for trying to scuff a ball...wetoddid. that was right after that one guy got tossed in the MLB for the emory board.

It is true kids are paying attention, and mimicking their idols

True, at this point I think they are better off going the direction of pro wresting. I wonder if they could get Mean Gene to do pre-game interviews, "I have never used steroids OH-Yeah!".
