This would be the THIRD time I've seen this happen. The other two times have been to chicks tipping over the bars in a switchback, and impaling the lever into their inner thigh. Both V-brake levers. Same deal, had to leave the lever in to be extracted at the ER for fear of it having hit the femoral artery. One girl had the whole handlebar sawed off the bike and taped to her leg as she was transported on a stretcher.
After I fell off a skinny log-ride, pushed the bar and brake lever a few inches into the topsoil, and thereby bent one of my brake levers, I bought a pair of XC bar ends. They're mounted pointing downward, so they will protect the brake levers the next time I fall off that log-ride (and there will be a next time, no question). It hadn't occurred to me that they could also protect ME from the levers.
