Hi All,

I'm new to the forum so forgive me if I'm in the wrong place. I have a few questions, but first a little background. My husband and I have decided to try touring. Problem is we have two road bikes set up for tris and general riding and no room for more bikes. So, we have to find two touring bikes and sell the old bikes. Ok...on we go...

First Q: I have a 2001 Lemond Buenos Aires 54cm with a mix of 105 and ultegra components and original Rolf Vectors Wheels. It's never been raced but has about 7000 miles on it. It's only been dumped slightly once (I hate falling down). What do you think I could get for this on Craig's List, Ebay or other venues? Am I out of my mind thinking I could get around $500?

Second Q: Husband has a 2001 Bianchi Veloce 63cm with Full Campy Record components. Never ever been raced and never dumped (he hates to fall more than I do). It's always been a bit small for him and he's going to get a new bike no matter what we decide. What do you think we can get for that one? Any tall riders out there looking for an awesome bike?

Third Q: Looking for two touring bikes that can take us anywhere that makes sense. Husband is 6'7" and 230lbs. We are having serious problems finding him a stock frame. We are pretty sure he'll need a custom frame but aren't sure who to use. I'm in DC but wouldn't mind having to travel to some to get the right bike but don't want to waste $3000 to $5000 on a bike he isn't going to be happy with. Any suggestions?

Last Q: Has anyone retrofitted a stock frame with S&S couplers? I'm pretty sure I can find a stock frame for myself but want to fly my bike to places (beats renting a car) and tour around. I've heard that retrofitting can be done but how is the final product?

All answers are welcome...even bratty ones.

Thanks,
Denise

You could try listing your LeMond for $500 as a starting off point - but just set a minimum that you'd be happy getting and be okay with offers below $500.00

The Serotta forum is often a good place to sell a used road bike. Here's a link to their classifieds:

As for the touring bikes - find a good reputable custom builder in your area - closer is better IMO - and work with him or her to get things just the way you want them. I suspect there are a few really good builders that aren't too far from where you live.

you probably won't get what your looking for for the Lemond. i'd guess that your looking at under $500 for that. your hubby's bike may not be worth much either. he may want to keep the group and just sell the frame off. with his height your more than likely looking at custom. look for a custom builder in your area. here's a good list to choose from for builders all over the country http://www.handmadebicycleshow.com/nahbs2009/Build01.htm

as far as the S&S couplers, that can be done by your local builder. just check S&S website for info on how it works. i'm not sure if they can be done on aluminum frames. if your going stock you may want to look into a Ritchey Breakaway frame. http://gvhbikes.com/ they don't use S&S but it has it's own Ritchey design.

S&S can't be retrofitted to anything but steel, and it will cost a LOT to get a frame redone. I'd say either look at something custom with the S&S installed at build (for your husband), and if you can fit, this is a pretty good option:

A coworker has one, they're really nice.
Those are my thoughts...
