well, rm techno advice kicks so much ass, i want to know what rm recommends for these.

i need a camara, and a laptop

camara
1) this will be the 3rd camara i buy going by rm advice. canon s3, panasonic lumix (dont remeber the model, i lost it on a rental car). currently i have a sony dscw55. nice camara, but i want more control and richer tons on my pictures. plus i just killed the camara, got salty water in.
i was told before not to buy a slr if i didnt plan to buy lenses. well. right now, i might consider buying lenses if i get into it, so a slr sounds like a good idea. plus i see they are under $500 now.

so, am torn between, unless you guys suggest anything better. the canon rebel xti (8mp) with the kit lens, or the nikon d40 (6mp) with the kit lens (which i´ve read on the internet is pretty kickass lens).
bugdet, ideally $500. i do not have any lenses, i´ve never had an slr before. initially i only plan on having the kit lens... might buy more if i get into photography (which seems likely).
yeah i know, but am not trying to do a canon vs nikon thread.

i like to take portraits, i like black and white pictures. so, any cheap/good lens suggestion would be nice. or if you think i should get just the body and X lens instead of going for the kit, i´d appreciate that, or suggestions on accesories as well.
i might use the camara to shoot video every now and then. quality is not important though, just the ability to do would be a plus. i hate shutter lag. i take pictures under low light, and i like to take pictures of moving things. i know that usually means expensive lenses usually, but am throwing the info just in case to help with the suggestions.

a year ago, i´d would have gotten a canon rebel digital, but now there seems to be a new kid on the block.
d40

the guy swears by it... but i dont know much, of if its a better deal than the anon rebel xti.

thing number 2
a laptop.

i need a laptop, a cheap one... basically ust to watch movies in my car, internetting, do some light work on the pictures i take with the new camara, and to take with it me to the beach and play SNES roms. thats about it
so the screen is, i guess, what matters the most to me, over processor, graphics card. followed by a comfy keyboard and hard drive space.
my friend has a hp 6707, which looks pretty nice, one of the nicest laptop screens i´ve seen, and it has a nice little remote, but its like $750 in the US... my ideal priced is around $500 (in the US), but if there nothing worthwhile at the range, i might consider spending more.

can i find a laptop with a parallel port? not really important feature, but i´d like to have it.
my sister is going to the states in a few weeks for a weekend, so i´d like to get a few toys... so any suggestions, accesories and stuff for the camera are welcome, i´d like save on shipping and taxes and buy all things at once.
price/value is more important than rock bottom price. so what cheap laptop you guys think hits the sweetspot?

thanks!

Let us start with this: Ken Rockwell is a fvcking moron.

That said, the D40 is a nice consumer SLR. If you don't ever intend to go beyond that scope, it's fine. Compact, easy to use, well built, kit glass is nice. However, if you think you'll seriously be getting into photography, the XTi wins. Cheaper, wider selection of lenses, much better sensor than the D40, much better low light (high ISO) performance, has an autofocus motor, and it's faster.

Never heard of Cosina lenses, honestly...stick with more well known brands. Read the reviews of lenses on FredMiranda.com before you buy. Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina are the well known "generic" lens manufacturers.

don't make me kick your ass
Get to a camera store and hold each camera. How it feels in YOUR hands is much more important than what any of us say. I myself have a Canon 30D with a Canon 70-300 zoom, a Promaster 28-70 zoom and a Tamron 28-300 VC zoom (that stands for Vibration Compensation).

I would buy what ever feels better in your hands, be it the Canon or the Nikon. Quality wise, they are 2 of the best "entry-level" DSLR cameras. Also check out the Pentax offerings in the same range.
