Last month my best friend Shane Diffendarfer (Silver Santa Cruz Bullit) had a bad accident at Keystone. We were riding the new trail at Keystone, it was Shane’s first time down the final section and he ended up in the ditch between a double he wasn’t expecting. Shane wasn’t going that fast and can only explain the crash as a freak accident.

Shane took a ride via flight for life to St. Anthony’s hospital in Denver. There he was told he broke his C4, C5, and C6 vertebrae in his neck, and suffered an “incomplete spinal cord injury” at one point Shane was told he would be a quadriplegic.

Shane’s neck was fused from the front and the back at St. Anthony’s, after several weeks in ICU Shane has been transferred to the famous Craig Hospital in Denver (Room #303 Bed A). Since Shane has been at Craig his rehab has been amazing. Shane already has significant movement in his arms and small movement in a finger and thumb. Shane also has slight movement of his legs and feeling in his entire body. All of the recent doctors have been very encouraging. Shane hopes to be home by Christmas, and be able to “walk” down the isle this summer.

Shane is one of the most positive people you will ever meet. He has been in good spirits and his attitude has been amazing. From the trail crew at Keystone to the nurses at Craig Shane has had the best treatment imaginable. His fiancé, friends, and family have been an excellent support group.

We are throwing a Benefit for Shane this Friday at his local bar in Ft. Collins.

Jeezus - best wishes for him and a speedy recovery.

Public Service Annoucement:

Please, ladies and gents - get a catastrophic health care plan if nothing else. They're not that expensive and could prevent stuff like this from being such a huge burden.
