As title i have the choice between both
2010 Bos Idylle rare or 35mm boxer race with the Avalanche cart installed
what would you go for?

No chance that the AVA Boxxer will require more maintenance. Its an open bath damper and a spring. I replaced the oil in my damper leg once in 2 years. Oil still looked like new.Boxxer would be lighter but need more regular servicing. Boxxer will have more infinite tuning be more of a hassle to tune.
Both awesome forks.
I'm not sure how good the Bos seals are. I'm guessing/hoping pretty good based on reports, but reports don't amount to as much as personal experience. As you yourself have a quite conflicting opinion on Boxxer seals to myself. I rode the Boxxer Avy set up mainly in pretty dusty conditions admittedly, and they would need a relube after a few months at best. A mates Bos lasted much longer. I'm sure the Boxxers would last longer in better conditions. However, 888s for example lasted much longer for me, and Bos for a mate. I am hoping Bos are as good as the Marzochhis, but I'm guessing they're not. Pretty sure the Bos is running more oil in the least oil leg than the Boxxer for lubrication. Both used? Both similar condition?
I'd say AVA Boxxer, but I have no experience with Bos. My AVA Boxxer RC has been flawless after two years. I'm looking at some of the new forks coming out just to change things up. How much is the seller asking for the Boxxer?

Avalanche cartridge doesn't improve the need to change the seals every once in a while. No chance that the AVA Boxxer will require more maintenance. Its an open bath damper and a spring. I replaced the oil in my damper leg once in 2 years. Oil still looked like new.

how would you even do this? open only the spring side, raise the stanchion, drain the fluid, replace? otherwise you'd have to replace the gallons of oil in the avy cart every time, which is pretty often on a boxxer. While the AVY cart side is open bath the air or coil side still needs frequent re-lubing . I have an AVY boxxer so just saying....
Flip bike over. Open spring side footnut. Pour in oil. Takes a couple minutes.how would you even do this? open only the spring side, raise the stanchion, drain the fluid, replace? otherwise you'd have to replace the gallons of oil in the avy cart every time, which is pretty often on a boxxer.

Craig's support has always been insane.Ava imho. Craig does support his products with BOS their customer support has been on/off and they had a few screwups.
compared to the quantity normally found in a boxxer? pretty accurate. Extra oil volume compared to mass market shocks has always been an avalanche quality, I've felt...in my two DHSes, chubie, and DHF.Gallons?
That's what I'm saying about Craig. Great CS.Craig's support has always been insane.
That being said, BOS now has two service centers in the US:
Commençal America
7141 Cypress Run DR
Las Vegas
NV 89131

Prestige MTB
East Avenue
New Canaan

Compare Avy and 2010+ boxxer oil heights. Boxxer also uses quite a lot of oil.compared to the quantity normally found in a boxxer? pretty accurate. Extra oil volume compared to mass market shocks has always been an avalanche quality, I've felt...in my two DHSes, chubie, and DHF.
Yeah i kinda chuckled at that one too. Last i checked 275ml or so wasn't quite a gallon or gallons..Gallons?
We know. Just busting your chops a lil bit.oh my glarb it's sarcasm gang
It's pinkbike gallonsYeah i kinda chuckled at that one too. Last i checked 275ml or so wasn't quite a gallon or gallons..
Exactly. I run a bunch of extra oil and a foam ring instead of the oil seal in my spring side leg. I replace the dust wiper about once a year when it finally starts to weep oil. I've replace the AVA side dust wiper once only because I had it apart.Inclag got it.
Just loosen crowns of spring side and you can service one leg at a time or with air, i let some out and loosen the allen foot bolt and let it drip dry and squirt in oil with syringe. I can do this now in couple of minutes. The avy cart oil i change once a year.
It's a private message you got, keep it private, don't slander someone with it publicly.Well I got a nasty PM from craig about spreading false information. Seriously? Is there really anybody that thought I meant there were MULTIPLE gallons of oil inside any avalanche has ever made? Are you high? I don't even think you could fit a gallon of oil in a MTN 10 without hydrolocking the whole thing.
i was gunna get one but than i didnt cuz u said it had gallons of oil in it, i consider my self a green mtn biker, I cant risk blowing an avalanche fork and creating an oil spill. Look what happened to the gulf...Well I got a nasty PM from craig about spreading false information. Seriously? yeah yeah, Whatever man. If someone sends me a PRIVATE message, it's between me and them, I don't go talking about it, making me sound right and them wrong on a forum. Carry on. oil spills and giggle giggle. Yawn.Slander? Really?
This don't talk about stuff on the forums stuff seems to miss the point of forums.
I like Craig, I love Avalanche; if he was goofy enough to see it the way its conveyed here, then he deserves a whole lot of ribbing and teasing.
Sheesh.
You've given it far too much thought, and in the end - MYOB, no need to have anal pain on anothers behalf.yeah yeah, Whatever man. Or a gallon of Avy oilYou've given it far too much thought, and in the end - MYOB, no need to have anal pain on anothers behalf.
I'm sorry your butt hurts, maybe some prep-H might sooth the burn.
Oh god, troll much? I didn't give it much thought, just a passing comment. There's nothing wrong with showin some gratitude and respect where it's due. IMO Craig at Avalanche doesn't deserve to be discredited by someone on a forum over some private words. He obviously doesn't have or want to waste time playing who's got the quickest wit on forums and is not in a position to open himself up to be shot down by semantics on here. I was just saying what I thought should be said. I wanna mind my own business, that's my point. Others business shouldn't be shared on a forumYou've given it far too much thought, and in the end - MYOB, no need to have anal pain on anothers behalf.

I think the best BOS fork has an air spring and high low compression, and rebound. Also has hydrolic bumpstop (whatever that is)Oh god, troll much? hasn't the butt hurt gag been played out yet? Boring.
Avy cart, quality craftsmanship, massive range of adjustment. Interchangeable to another chassis.
Boxxer Chassis, basic craftsmanship,quality, finnish.
Bos, basic but proven design, decent craftsmanship, quality and finnish. Arguably less service intervals than Boxxer spring leg.
Bos heavier.
They have the same external adjustments low speed rebound and comp don't they? Or does the Bos have external high speed comp too?
Now thats the spirit!!Simple, obvious humor just annoys me sorry. Nanny whatever degrading word discredits me, whatever.
Pretty sure I just have an Avvy shock in the house at present. Trying out new Bos stuff right now, but that has no reflection on anything. I'm keen to get my 3" stroke Avvy converted to 2.75" if I can for my G2 Zerode. Pretty sure this can be done. Not sure if I loose a touch of travel using the 3" stroke body, but that's way off topic now.
If I had unlimited funds I'd probably be ridding a Avy 40, maybe the new air 40.
Bos do a few different shock tunes as stock I think. And will do custom shim stacks if needed. I think the shim stacks are more basic than Avalanches(less shims), but still get the job done it would seem. The stroke conversion sounds possible (oh yeaaah) and it might even net you a relatively larger oil volume than comparable stroke shocks.......Plenty of oil already. Would rather it was lighter.
I've always heard good things about the BOS stuff, but with that suspicious tinge of 'expensive and rare'(literal, not the shock...) making it more interesting.Yeah same. It's very hard to find out anything about Bos internals though. Never seen an exploded view or any internal photos.
Avalanche has been using proper damper designs for >10 years when most of the competition is just starting to make real products, if at all.Yeah, I had a BMW back then. Still one of the best suspension set ups I've ridden. And I'm unaware of another suspension maker that EVERY product ships tuned to the rider from the get-go. (Does BOS do this? - genuine question - )
It's the hydraulic bottom out control.hydrolic bumpstop (whatever that is)
Yeah I'm riding that one now. I'm not sure what the shim stack looks like, how the air spring works to not low through the mid stroke, what's going on with the negative spring, how it balances etc. Forks feel good so far. But these aren't the ones the OP is asking about. Not even sure if anything is the same in them damping or spring wise.I think the best BOS fork has an air spring and high low compression, and rebound. Also has hydrolic bumpstop (whatever that is)
Yeah, Oil runs out of places to go so it gets squashed basically. The shocks come in 6 setups. Craftmanship is not the best out there, adjustability is very limitedYeah a couple of mates have their rebound on full on the new coil Bos Shocks, sending them in for a reshim, or face shim at least., due to the different setups. Some people say, that the high speed compression cirquit has too limited oil flowThis might aid in the air shock feeling pretty good so far. I've not ridden to many rocky tracks on it yet, but I've never noticed in spike at all.. There's a thread about it somewhere here. Udi and Vorsprung suspension did some dyno testing with it.Cool, I'll try find it.
Riding a Stoy Rare now, I am satisfied at the moment.I'm on the Void, but thinking I might get a coil for back up and rockier longer tracks. Feels great on the semi smooth jumpy tracks I'm riding though. Will see how it goes on a longer 8minute rocky track on the weekend.
The forks are top notch though. Craftmanship is up there with the best.
The Idylle RaRe air has a claimed weight of 2920g.
The damping is really good. Like reallyreally good. Tons of control. And each two clicks make a real difference.
The only downside is that you have to pull out some tools to set the fork up.Yeah bit of a PITA that. But you only need a screw driver and spanner/shifter and air pump like any other air fork. Beats changing coil springs and you do have high speed comp adjust. Guessing low speed is just closing an orifice and moving the elbow between low and high.
Stiction is definitely up there with let's say a Fox 40 with Shakira coating, really impressive for an air fork I think.Agreed, jut waiting to see how quick they gum up. Only a 1 lip seal I'm guessing. Anyone know?
A friend of mine came off a AVA Boxxer WC and rides now the Idylle rare too.
What can I say? He is really happy with the outcome. Damping is comparable to AVA, also in the midspeed, but the air spring and the chassis are a huge step up compared to the Boxxer.
I am on the BOS Springys since a month.Same, so I can't say too much yet, but so far I'm happy.
It's the hydraulic bottom out control.
