I'm running a DHX 5 on mine, I weigh about 205 and I use a 8.5x2.5 with 550 springs.
You can pick up DHX3 or Van Rs cheap and PUSH it, that would be about the same cost total as a new DHX 5.
there are also a ton of 8.75x2.75 5th Element flowing around from back when SC was blowing them out for 25 bucks a pop, so someone must have one laying around and I think Avalanche offers a rebuild for about 150 so you can have a kickass shock for about 175-200. I have one somewhere waiting for that precise reason.
I'll second the DHX5. I'm 5-11, 175 on a large and I use a 500# spring, and stay light on the preload. As far as a DH shock, it's a dream, It will get you to the bottom of the hill in a hurry! But it also pedals and even climbs pretty good (well, pretty good for a 7" bike on a coil spring!)

right now i have a Vanilla RC, but its old and popping. So far i am all for the DHX 5.0 unless someone knows something i dont or a better shock for the bike.

Yep!! Considering I have to buy a year license at it will be the only race I will compete in that requires it, plus gas down there. It sucked in my lifted up Dodge but now that I have this, it's better....
I also have an old bullit. Anybody put a slightly shorter shock on the old bullit to lower it and slacken it a bit? I already made sure the shock shuttle was in the slacker position. I'm tempted, but I don't know if it would work out well at all. The riding and racing I do doesn't require much travel.
