Berrecloth 3-Peats at Monster Park
McCaul, Basagoitia finish close behind

It took an extra day to play out, but the wait proved worthwhile at the third-annual Bike Magazine Monster Park slopestyle contest. In one of the closest contests to date, the top three riders were separated by less than 2 points. With the top five riders throwing down some of the best runs of their careers, Darren Berrecloth narrowly edged out Cam McCaul and Paul Basagoitia. Ben Boyko, Thomas Vanderham and Jamie Goldman followed closely behind.

With bluebird skies and perfect temperatures at Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia, Berrecloth threw an Indian air over the course’s first tabletop and followed that by a huge 360 off the bridge atop the judges’ tower, a move he crashed on in his first run. On the lower part of the course, Berrecloth whipped over the moto-step-up and finished by airing over the 10-foot tall spine and the green monster wall ride.

The run combined big moves and lots of amplitude, but Berrecloth was the final rider on course and nobody was quite sure if his run was enough to earn him a third-consecutive victory and the winner’s share of the $10,000 prize purse. McCaul, Basagoitia and Boyko had each thrown down possibly winning runs.

McCaul landed a huge corked backflip off the courses wooden step-up-to-step-down and followed that with a 360 on the first quarter, bar spin over the second quarter and then a backflip followed by a tail whip on the courses final two jumps. He was the only rider to throw a flip, whip and spin in one run and narrowly missed first place.

Basagoitia’s run included a first for the rider from Minden, Nevada—an X-up to no footer, which he threw on the opening table. Then he threw a big no-footed can off the judges tower, back flipped the moto-step-up and a tailwhip over the spine-to-dirt jump transfer. Bas started his final run several riders before the leaders and for a while, his run was the one to beat.

Boyko was one rider who thought he had a chance to top Bas and finally unseat Berrecloth from the top of the Monster Park podium. Boyko’s first run was the highest scoring of the heat and his second run was just as good. He started with a fully extended superman seat grab off the first jump, a no footed can off the quarter pipe below the judges table then a big tailwhip off the moto-step up and 360 over the spine, one of the contest’s most creative moves.

Thomas Vanderham, who threw an Indian air over the initial tabletop and a huge no hander over the moto booter, finished in fifth while Jamie Goldman, who delivered two strong runs but slid off the bottom of the course both times, finished sixth. Rounding out the finals were Dave Smutok, fifteen year old Brandon Semenuk, Carlo Diekmann, Steve Romaniuk, Wayne Goss and Mike Kinrade, who returned from a horrific crash in the first heat to take a second run.

The contest almost never happened. Heavy and consistent rains forced the postponement of the event yesterday and many riders were unsure if they could stay an extra day. But with the skies clearing, all the qualifying riders shuffled plane tickets and rode hard on the final day.
