Hey, I heard that Hayes would be putting out a cheaper version of their hydraulic disc brake for '02. Something about a cheaper lever body or something...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any info on availability and/or price.

Thanks

I'm not sure if they're going to be sold aftermarket, but we're speccing them on most of our bikes. The differences are the levers (could be plastic blades, or alloy, we use alloy), and the finish on the calipers is different. Functionally, they work exactly the same, and they end up being a little lighter than the standard Hayes too, imagine that.

they came on a few bikes we got in at our shop already and im not impressed. They use some plastic for the lever part (not the blade) but the part that clamps the bar. This causes a weird feel cause if you pull hard you can actually see the ENTIRE body FLEX A LOT, and i personally dont like the way they feel. it feels like they have play in them cause it seems like they are attaching the blade diffrently too.

DS Dom - can you get a pic of this? Now I'm really curious! Think it would be remediable (sp?) by using the metal bar clamp that comes on the good Hayes?

yeah, the standard ones are called the HFX-Mag, the new cheaper ones are the HFX-Comp. the Comp uses a composite (read: not plastic, but not metal, a combination of the two apparently) lever and body. and yes the body does have a bit of flex, but little more than the standard one from what i tried. still seem pretty bloody powerful tho! also quite a bit cheaper.

I don't think it's a mistake at all. Imagine how much more you would have enjoyed your bike if way back when you got a Deore or LX equiped bike that had cheap way powerful Hayes on em instead of cheezy promax v brakes.
I'm glade Giant is forging ahead with the likes of taking chances on affordable hydros, ATC1 bikes, and the like.

By composite they mean it is plastic of a type, but the plastic will be re-enforced with fibreglass or cabon of some type. Still look very much plastic but less flex and less likely to break in a crash.
