Score the log every 4-6" about .5-1" deep depending on the diameter and then knock out the chunks in between with a hatchet. This will give you a super grippy riding surface.

That works, but it's easier to do that, and then carve it off with a chainsaw. We've built a ton of stuff like that.

That's how we have done it in the past for logrides: We use a Fiskars axe for the chopping.

Though...with the bigger saws that I've acquired we've been burning 2-stroke a lot more.
