during the course of my normal oil change, is it OK to use a degreaser and large pipe-cleaner to clean out the lowers?

the SRAM site suggests spraying alcohol and using a rag, but I'd like to do something a bit more thorough. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't damage anything.

You can use a light degreaser if you need to just make sure to clean it thoroughly before you fill it back up. A good rinse with water after the degreaser then a very good alcohol clean will do it.

If you haven't tried the alcohol clean, you might be surprised at how well it can work. And then you don't need to clean up after.

For the brush, make sure it leaves no lint or fuzz or anything behind. You don't want any of that in your valving.
