Towing the party line.
Rumours are lighting up my email box this morning that DH1 is officially cancelled. No word as to why yet, trying to get in touch with Ray now, although I am sure he will post soon if it is true.

If so, team managers everywhere breathe a sigh of relief as their travel budgets just got a bit easier to manage.

Slightly more info here. Will update as soon as I hear back form anyone.

The Red Bull portion was the rumor I have hard quite a bit lately.

They have had an eye on the WC series for years but needed to find their way in that still worked for the brand.

RB Media house might just be that ticket, and there would be no worry of quality and financial stability that is for certain.

I'm guessing since Rob Warner has worked for Red Bull in the past, he will be back commentating next year?

So actually, not much has changed, apart that Red Bull has replaced Freecaster. Sad to see Freecaster go, but Red Bull is certainly a great sponsor with deep pockets!

Breaking News: Red Bull to Broadcast 2012 World Cups, DH1 Series Likely Cancelled

We received information yesterday indicating that Red Bull will very likely be broadcasting the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series online, for free.

Curious about the implications this might have on the DH1 series, we asked Freecaster's main man, Ray Dulieu, if it would affect his plans for the widely praised downhill world tour. Would anything change if Red Bull broadcasts the 2012 World Cups?

The answer we received was astonishing. "There is no point in competing with Red Bull," Ray said, "We can't contest with them. We will not be able to provide a better product than what Red Bull can do."

Clearly surprised by the news (which he had also received through a different source), Ray expressed both disappointment and joy. "I have always said that Red Bull was our biggest threat and mountain biking's greatest opportunity. They are providing what the sport needs. The creation of the DH1 Series pushed the UCI and Red Bull to improve their game. If Red Bull hadn't seen Freecaster's numbers, they likely wouldn't be doing this. The fact that they are investing in mountain biking means Freecaster did something right."

The DH1 Series was scheduled to have six pro races, the dates of which were to work with the UCI World Cup schedule. Freecaster.tv planned to broadcast the series in HD, for free, with Rob Warner as the host.

According to Ray, the Red Bull broadcast is rumored to have "10 HD cameras and is a 99.999% done deal."

"DH1 has served it's purpose," Ray said, "At the end of the day, downhill and the sport of mountain biking have benefited."

An official announcement is expected from the UCI or Red Bull in the next few days.

Sounds like good news to me! Maybe overly idealistic, but I wonder if Redbull will hire the freecaster guys to do (some of) the work?
Seems like it would be a smart business move on Redbull's part, to hire the guys who are used to covering events like this... I'm sure it isn't easy!

but what happens to all of the bull riding and poker? You know, real sports.
I take you have never been on, near or worked with Bulls. The difference between riding a 35LB bike that you have 99% control of and a 2K LB animal you have 0 control over is not CLOSE. Poker I will agree with!

NBC is the only one of the big 4 networks that actively broadcasts sports live online. Fox and CBS do not broadcast their NFL transmissions live online, but NBC broadcasts Sunday Night NFL live online.

I watch ESPN3 online broadcasts alot live and as replays that stay up for a few days afterwards.

I'd just like to pose the possibility that NBC will invest in an online action sports channel, as opposed to a cable channel. Less expensive to run, easier to track customer response. And most of all, action sports are aimed at a younger, internet savvy demographic.

Makes sense to me.

In case no one heard this today... Redbull and NBC form an action sports broadcast relationship. Wonder if the World Cup will be involved.

"NBC SPORTS GROUP AND RED BULL MEDIA HOUSE ANNOUNCE
PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE “RED BULL SIGNATURE SERIES”

‘Red Bull Signature Series’ to Air Across NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network
Beginning in January 2012

New York, N.Y. – December 19, 2011 – The NBC Sports Group, and its action sports arm Alli, and Red Bull Media House announced today a long-term partnership for the development of a new property, the Red Bull Signature Series. The strategic endeavor will bring 35 hours of jaw-dropping and one-of-a-kind action sports programming to NBC and the NBC Sports Network starting in January 2012.

The Red Bull Signature Series will include the most progressive and innovative snowboarding, mountain biking, freestyle motocross, ice cross downhill, skiing and BMX events, showcased on custom courses from the inspiration of the athletes themselves. The series features some of Red Bull’s top events including X-Fighters, Supernatural, Crashed Ice, Dream Line, Rampage and Cold Rush and other third party action sports competitions (see below for details on shows). The Red Bull Signature Series kicks off on NBC with Crashed Ice on Saturday, January 21. For more information, visit www.redbullsignatureseries.com.

“We look forward to partnering with the NBC Sports Group to expand their footprint in sports and deliver unique competition programming that you don’t see every day,” said Werner Brell, Managing Director, Red Bull Media House North America.

In conjunction with Alli Sports, a division of the NBC Sports Group, the Red Bull Signature Series will offer brands fully integrated sponsorship packages, including on-the-ground, on-air enhancements, commercial units and authentic combinations across its network and digital platforms. With the goal of pure sport progression, the new series will provide an event and media platform with more than 20 global events spread throughout the year, monthly programming on NBC and NBC Sports Network, and multiple digital and social extensions.

"This partnership is an amazing opportunity to create a new global property with a terrific brand in Red Bull, who already produces premium events and world class content,” said Alli Sports President Wade Martin. “The Red Bull Signature Series has amazing growth potential and provides a tremendous opportunity for other brands to be part of some of the world’s most unique sporting events with the NBC Sports Group and Red Bull Media House.”

Red Bull has created captivating athlete and sports content for nearly 25 years, and the relationship with the NBC Sports Group and Alli provides the ability to further reach mainstream audiences around the world.

“Red Bull Media House is a creator of spectacular and unique content in the action sports genre,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, Senior Vice President, NBC Sports Ventures. “We could not be more excited to be bringing this creativity to the NBC Sports Group family of networks.“

The Red Bull Signature Series will feature 20 hours of programming on NBC and 15 hours on NBC Sports Network each year over the course of the partnership. For additional information, visit www.redbullsignatureseries.com.

Red Bull Signature Series programming highlights to include:

· Red Bull X-Fighters: The world's best freestyle motocross riders travel the globe to compete in the premiere FMX series in front of thousands of fans at some of the most iconic locations on the planet.
· Red Bull Rampage: The creative, unrestricted ethos of free-ride mountain biking comes to the contest arena while staying true to the sport's core ideals. Poised on a sandstone ridge in the brutal landscape near Virgin, Utah, riders choose whatever line they dare between an established start gate and the finish line 1,500ft (500m) below. Exactly what happens between those two points will be legendary.

· Red Bull Supernatural: The brainchild of snowboarding icon Travis Rice, the event is a first-of-its-kind backcountry competition designed to showcase the skills of the best all-around riders on the planet. Over 100 man-made features have been built on the slope over summer, so that once snow falls, a series of tree-line features, jumps and drops will emerge creating the ultimate backcountry run.

· Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship: A combination of ice hockey, downhill skating and boarder-cross, the official Ice Cross Downhill World Championship brings the toughest, fastest ice cross downhill racers from around the world to race through an unforgiving, gritty, freezing downhill ice canal course full of mind-and-body-bending twists, turns and chutes. The rules are simple: Four athletes line up at the start, duke it out shoulder to shoulder and the first across the finish line wins.

· Red Bull Dream Line: 16 of the world’s best BMX dirt riders meet at Anthony Napolitan’s private training facility in Minnesota, riding an un-restricted trails-style course that sends riders to the skies and back down again.
· Red Bull Cold Rush: The invitation-only event returns for year two at its stateside home of Silverton Mountain in Colorado, North America's highest and steepest ski area. Only accessible via helicopter or hiking, the high-alpine bowls, chutes and cliffs are home to the three-day competition. Comprised of three disciplines - Big Mountain, Cliffs, and Slopestyle - the peer-judged event will determine the best all-around backcountry skier.

Sorry given the choice I would ride a DH bike down any RACE COURSE over getting on a 2K PBR animal. I am not arguing sport vs sport just safety. It goes bad fast. I have seen bulls kick through RAIL-ROAD ties. So it is different. But saying it isn't a sport is off base. Different but we all wish there was the $$$ in DH as there is in Rodeo.

For sure.

RB investing in Media is pretty huge. Definitely a logical next step for them though.

The RedBulletin has been landing on my desk for a few months now and it boggles my mind the reach they have into action sports on a global level.

Looking forward to the canned, packaged, dramatically voiced-over 1/2-hour (23 mins w/ commercials) wrap-up of the whole WC season from the perspective of Aaron Gwinn and his lesser TWR teammates next November in lieu of having to watch all the races live on the Internet. Before or after figure skating would be ideal. Thks.

Crap, I forget you people are real and I have to explain myself. Also that Transcend hates run-on sentences. Fragments, probably, too.

I'm thinking of the way "action sports" are often presented on broadcast TV. Tidy wrap-ups that focus on one athlete through a season with way too much lifestyle and not much actual action. I picked Gwinn, because he's an aw-shucks, wholesome American kid with a prodigious amount of talent on a marquee team. TV perfect.

And unless you inside folks know otherwise, it's not saying anything about broadcasting WC races live the way we've all grown to love over the past few years with Freecaster. That sucks.
