"Revenge of the Ridge"
Cross Country Race
AMBCS Cross Country Race #6

Sunday June 22nd
10:00 A.M.
Registration: Pre-Registration will be at Rich Mountain Community College on Saturday June 21 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Registration on Sunday June 22 the day of the event opens at 7:00 A.M. and close's at 9:30 A.M. the race will begin at 10:00 A.M.

Staging Area: The staging area will be at the Polk County Senior Center located on Race Track Road. See the Mena Map below for directions.

Course Description: The course is a 7 mile loop of mostly single track and limited passing so pass where you can. Racer's will start at the bottom of the foothills of Rich Mountain, ride some level ground then its time to start climbing for about a half mile with an elevation change of about 100 feet to the Earthquake ridge trail. Once on the trail the terrain will will level off a bit for some fast and twisty single track through a grove for tree's for about a half mile or so. Once a racer gets through the winding trail of tree's its time to plunge down into a small gorge, enjoy the plunge cause in just a matter of yards you are starting on the hardest part of this trail and that would be the 1 mile climb. The climb will have you gasping for breath in places and awing at the scenery in others. Going up the side of the mountain you will encounter the following terrain; steep little climbs, narrow single track on the edge, quick little down hills, really tight switchbacks, and large rocks to negotiate. You will know you are almost done with the climb once you get to the highway. Here you will have to cross the highway (be careful this is a busy highway, police will direct traffic during the race). Once across the highway you will do a short climb and then the fun begins. For over 1 mile you will be on some of the sweetest downhill single track in the state, expect to find the following kind of terrain on the downhill; very rocky and rough, switchbacks, quick turns, fast burmed turn, drop offs, and a small rock garden. When you reach the small rock garden its time to do a little bit of climbing up to the highway where you will cross it once again (we will have someone directing traffic here as well during the race). After you cross the highway you get to enjoy a nice little ramp for some air and then its pretty flat and opened for about 200 yards or so, if you need to pass now would be a good time to do it cause after that you head down some narrow single track with 4 switchbacks that goes down to a creek, cross the creek and you get to start climbing back up to the point to where you came onto the trail. Once at the top you will head down an old dirt road and then on to some single track that will bring you back down to the staging area. There you go you have just completed 1 lap of the Ridge.

Laps: Beginners will do 1 lap, Sport will do 2 laps and Expert 3.

Special Note: The course will be closed to cross country pre-riding on the west side of highway 88 during the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. on Saturday June 21st for the Downhill race. If you are wanting to pre-ride please do it before 11:00 A.M. or after 3:00 P.M. The course will be marked Friday morning June 20th so you can pre-ride then as well. Please watch for other riders at the top of the course after crossing highway 88, this will be the entry point for the downhill racers and there may be a few of them out pre-riding the downhill course.
