Well i am looking to get started on my 2010 event calendar and was wondering if there is some kind of site or calendar that has dates available for next years races, jump jams, competitions or anything along those lines. would be nice to have something like that that includes collegiate, SE series events, stand alone single comps things of that nature......

WAY early for that yet! I know Beech and Hawksnest are on board with racing
again. They have winter to focus on now with skiing so it will prob. be late
winter before you start seeing scheds.

thanks Brado! unfortunately i wont be here for that one. ill be out west. awesome fun event though!

I feel ya there metaldude but to be honest that is what hurts a lot of events. when you propose to sponsors they usually want dates...the sooner the dates are decided the sooner you get sponsors, support participants...everything that makes a good event. It also helps alleviate any double booked dates for the summer. last come last serve when it comes to calendars.......i am looking forward to seeing some action at Beech next season it looks like a fun course.

anyway...maybe we can use this thread to post events as they are finalized and whatnot.......

The powers-to-be at the Dirty Bird are currently finalizing proposals/race dates for next season. Hopefully we'll have some official announcements soon!

Oh, I totally agree with you! But, I have been around long enough to know better.
I have to plan events that take more than sat. and sun. in January so it would be nice....

Here is the blueprint kiddies. Follow it and you'll get stuff done. It's the timeline of money.

July - Have your proposal, dollar amounts for sponsorship levels and sponsor benefits on paper.
August 15 - Submit your proposal to the money person at each sponsor and your venue. By submit I mean have it on their desk ready to read.
August 16 - Call to make sure they have it and ASK for suggestions on how to better hook a sponsor. Ask for money! Don't be a wuss. DO IT!
September 15 - Find out how much money each sponsor has offered. Be prepared to counter offer for more money. Give them more than the sponsorship level outlines!
October 15th - Announce your date for your event. Online, call every magazine and newspaper applicable. Submit a digital "press release" to every e-zine and magazine editor, both by email and follow up by phone.
December 15 - Companies finalize their budget and tell you what they can afford. Be prepared to give them the next sponsorship level ABOVE what money level they pay for.
December 16 - Compamies that give out money go on vacation and disappear until Jan. 15
January 30 - Call and ask for your checks.

A lot of people were using this calender that I setup. Any person who registers as part of the group can add or edit events and set a reminder. I think we managed to have every single event in the South on it this year. It's a shame there weren't more registered users. Great tool really.

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/dh-ds/cal

If all of you will add your '09-'10 events, it fills in nicely.

Butch must be working with the Massenutten folks... haha
just saw this on DH Forum:
Massenutten Race
ONE week early The weekend of Fri April 30, 2010 (Practice) 12-5:00
Sat May 1, 2010

Should be the last race on the schedule... so I can wait til' the end
or the year to trash my brand new rims!

they're trying to avoid the conflict with graduation week at James Madison. It always used to be the week after the race, but the last couple years fell on the same weekend.

I am trying to get Sugar on board for next year as well...I will keep you guys posted.

First off, Great news Ryan!

If Sugar gets back on board, I will have little reason to leave the Carolinas next year. I loved racing at Beech and Hawksnest this year, and both of those places are going to be bigger and better for next year. Add Sugar back in the mix and all will be well again.:thumb:

I smell a High Country Cup in the future...?

Seriously we should try to get some kind of link with points for all three venues even if different promoters are doing them. That would be awesome.

Brad, shoot me a message if you're looking for any help on that project. Would love to be involved in anything that helps DH in the southeast.

Great Idea Mules, should be an obvious link for the venues to really get everyone involved.
It will only make more people interested in riding and racing in that area.
like the good ole days!
Get slalom going in the series also! Just brings in more money to the resorts.
Built correctly there won't be too much hassle and friendly for DH bikes is
the key!
Sponsors will prob. see a series like that as opp. to build as well.

FYI,

souther slopes need grass on them to insulate the snow from melting/washing underneath. If you build slalom courses on them, then in the fall you have the shape of a slalom course on the grass. So good luck with that one.

Definitely need some slalom races...
The Triple Crown Series will have slalom racing for 2010! There wasn't much time this year to build a track...but it is in the plans for next year. No worries on snow getting blown on it either. Straight dirt berms year-round!

I'm game for the cup; might consider a different name for it though. Just my 2 cents.

Tentative 2010 Triple Crown Series Dates:

Race 1 June 12-13 DH, DS
Race 2 July 17-18 DH, DS
Race 3 August 14-15 DH, DS

Other events:

Slopestyle Comp/DS September 4-5

Oz Fest DH Event October 9

SWEET! Good to hear you don't have lame excuses to not build slalom.
All of these places have held them in the past and somehow still got through
the winters afterwards. haha
All it will do is bring out the oldschool DS rippers and present another way to bring capitalism to the mountain.

I would love to help with laying out a slalom when you get to that point halla!

Sounds awesome Ryan. Looks like Avery county is the place to be in 2010! Hawksnest will be bringing it big and our dates won't conflict with Beech mountain races.

you got it bud! I feel like having a man on the mic makes for a really awesome racing experience. It keeps the atmosphere hype and helps coordinate/communicate to racers in an effective manner.

Shameless self plug: If anyone else needs/wants an MC for their next race/event just shoot me a PM and we can work it out:thumb:

I am trying to get Sugar on board for next year as well...I will keep you guys posted.

If you get Sugar back involved I suggest the two following things:

Update your schedule. Follow something like Beech's which is a Sunday race around noon, not a 10am Saturday race.

Also, please do it outside USA Cycling. I would hate to have a slue of Carolina races with only on venue still doing it through USA Cycling, which requires a license.

I would think that wouldn't be too hard to talk Sugar into after their last
National experience, especially seeing other venues nearby doing it
successfully. I certainly agree with you though, don't need them just
like we don't need the Gov. running things that can be run more efficient
without them.

Being a member of USA Cycling entitles you to secondary medical insurance protection should you be hurt during an event and will kick in as primary if you're the kind with no insurance. So if you get hurt at Beech or Sugar and you have no insurance or little insurance, who's gonna help you pay the bill?

I'd rather see all Beech and Sugar events get a USAC liability coverage, pay my $60.00 in March or April and know I've got a little more safety. Oh sure, you can sue a resort and the umbrella policy to try to get your medical bills paid...but that's years down the road.

It happened to me and it cost USAC's insurer $16k plus to fix me. That's well worth it. A kid got hurt last year at a Snowshoe race and he shattered everything. His dad is our postmaster here and the kid had no health insurance fresh out of the nest. He was transported to 3 different hospitals from the resort, helicopter rides and all. The bills are massive.

Something to consider.

So snowshoe ran races with no insurance? I figured all ski resorts have insurance
year round for athletes on the mountain. Surely they have something for
ski season? Are all the other East Coast Events rolling with no insurance
that dropped USAC? There are other Ins. options than Big Brother?
IMO - If you don't have insurance and are racing Downhill
you're an idiot period. I guess it's like I stated before the USAC is like our
Gov. in that they are there to take care of the idiots at the cost of the responsible.

No. Event insurance is seperate from being a USAC member participating in an event. If an event gets it's liability insurance polciy and event sanctioning through USAC, you as a USAC Member then have additional health insurance protection should you be injured while participating in that event.

If you're hurt at Beech, Sugar, Snowshoe, Diablo, etc....you have no health insurance protection from their event insurance(typically McKay Insurance). They have a liability protection policy (typically $1mil) to protect the promoter, staff and facility from lawsuits with NO health insurance protection for the participants. When you race these non-USAC events, you receive NO health insurance protection. You receive a waiver of liability from their insurer and waive all rights to sue. :thumb:

Quoted for truth.
It takes a special kind of stupid to race DH without health insurance.
When the surgeries for a broken leg can bring the bill over $100,000 easy.......
yeah a special kind of stupid.
You can do a whole season worth of racing in the Southeast now without having to buy a USAC license, so Sugar would be silly to go back to a Norba format.
I don't see that changing around here either unless USAC brings more to the table to make it worth it. They charge $150 for a pro license to people with no salary.
No thanks.
