What if there were no UCI restrictions on equipment? What if there was no support vehicle following you down the course? What if every tradition in road racing except the big wheels, drop bars and riding position was gone? What formats could appeal to an audience with a short attention span?

Required aid station stops where racers have to take a beer bong full of mountain dew.

Seriously though, I have trouble linking anything road with a short attention span. It's kinda like watching a marathon...

You will see a bunch of dorks with full fairings. UCI might be wrong alot of the time, but I think standard road bikes is the way...

lol if its gonna be a track stand race its gotta be downhill and the speed limit is strictly inforces at 20' per hour, if u go any bit faster at all, then u get the meat hook and they just drag u off the course by the meat hook.

Allow not only drugs but surgical modification. Breathing in and out of the same hole is very inefficient. The Ultimate Roadie wold have an exhaust port in his back attached to his lungs so when he gets up to speed air will just flow through his gaping mouth and lungs just like gills.

Thats is what I'm getting at, marathons are boring to watch. What I'm talking about is not pure road racing as we know it, but its bastard offspring. Forget groomed racetracks or road courses. Lets down some mountain road thats covered in ice or some crazy conditons, and remove the technology restrictions. Get some hydraulics brakes or stiff suspension on the bikes and redifine road riding.

ummm now it kinda sounds like any good downhill race... na make it rigid still if u breack your frame oh well other riders just have to dodge your body, and brakes are only allowed on the front... with only one brake pad the other is just bare metal.

I've always wanted to build a crotch rocket-like road DH race bike - 24" hookworms mounted on a small full squishy frame w/ GIANT disc rotors, full fairings, and drop bars so it can do 70+ down mountain passes. HUGE 56T ring up front w/ some 160mm cranks so you can pedal at 70 mph. Then you throw on a fork like a shortened Mr Dirt (3 - 4 inches) so it can deal w/ the speeds.

I do belive that there are messenger compitions like that now. they make them take hands and feet of the bike as the compition goes along.

Over a pit of vipers Indana Jones style. Talk about the ultimate sacrifice for your sport.

Crits, in my opinion, are about as extreme as bike racing gets. Yeah, it's not some super gnar DH or 4X course, but there are a couple of hundred guys all in the 53t ring, all within a couple of inches of each other.
I love going to the "Thursday Night World Champs" here in town, and just watching. A Pro race downtown is pretty sick...

Just like soccer is boring to most of us Americans, but people go apes*** in Europe over multi-hour, tied 1-1 games. Just a matter of what they're brought up with, for the most part. Then there are some of us who just can't get enough cycling, any kind.
Nuture vs. Nature...:)
