Hi guys!
Ive got a question for you fox guys out there.

I have 2 fox forks, one is 2012 FLOAT 160mm and the other is 2013 TALAS 180mm.

Screen Shot 2022-02-08 at 21.30.23.png

I want to convert the 2013 TALAS to FLOAT by moving the FLOAT air spring over to the TALAS chassie.

However there are some questions i want to find out before i start to take things apart, and man did i try to google this and still find no answers. Reason i dont want to start before i know about compability is because if i remove the TALAS i cannot put it back without special tool as i understand?

- Will the 2012 air top cap fit the 2013 fork? (2012 is 160mm normal anodized type, 2013 is kashima 180mm upper)
- Will the 2012 FLOAT air spring work in the 2013 uppers? (i know length is wrong, but i am thinking to lathe one extension for it to fit 180mm)
- How do i remove the TALAS, without braking it, due to the IFP pressure and needing this special needle? What will happen when i remove it from fork leg?
- Does the 2013 TALAS have that special air-valve port that normalized the pressure between negative and positive spring? If so, will i need a newer kind of FLOAT air shaft assembly that has that negative chamber?
- Would it be possible to do other way around, and move the DAMPER from the 180mm fork to the 160mm? (the 160mm fork has not damper, chassie and spring only)

I would be very thankful if anyone has the experience and answers here. I bought the 2012 fork from a guy claiming it was 180mm, just to notice it was 160mm when taking it apart and notice some cm. missing from the rod on the air spring.

I attached the images from FOX webpage where i looked up the two models:

I also tried to find a new shaft to replace it, with a proper 180mm shaft.

I found several kinds of shafts, but i am not sure at all which one to use, one has the negative spring thing the other don't:

Long time ago, i didnt see your reply.

I dont know if it fits, but i would be happy to sell it if i find a top cap to fit the fork so that i can remove it.

Hi Kebarb,

If you have a Talas 4 (as I see on your pics, there is no need special tools because there is no IFP chamber like the talas3 and 2!

1., The top cap will be fit for the 2013
2., The 2012 and 2013 Floats are compatible with each other

From 2015-2017 and the 2018 - untill nowdays Floats are not compatible with the olders because the stanschin inner profile is different!

The 2015-2017 Float does't compatible with the 2018- 2024 Float but I have a solution to fit the 2018 float with the 2015-2017 Float
and I have a solution to convert the 2015-2017 and 2018-2024 Floats to COIL with the Marzocchi Z1 Coil conversation kit!

If you can measure the 2013 Float piston to me, than I can draw and print a part which you can use with the 2018-2024 Float assy, than you can use the 2018- 2024 Float with the 2013 fork!

In the weekend i will check that the 2018 Topcap fit on to the 2010-2014 36 Fork!

If it work than we can make it!

Here is a Valve where you can pressurize the negative chamber because the 2015-2017 Float stanchion doesn't have a little hole inside it to equalize the positive and negative chambers!

Szia!

Thanks for reply!

The code for my TALAS 180mm fork is CB98 and when i search i get this:
2013 Factory Series 36 TALAS 26 180 FIT

Part number: 910-90-412
Description: 2013, 36-K, TALAS 26in F-S, 180, RC2, FIT, Blk, Gold Logo, 20QR, 1.5 T, Disc, 42mm Rake, DI
Service - 2013-2017 FIT RC2 Cartridge Rebuild
Service - 2002-2013 Bath Oil Volume Chart
Manual - VIDEO- FORK and SHOCK- SAG Setup 101

However, the older fork that was on the first images in this thread, i sold it because the top cap did not fit, seems threads were different. Also i think the diameter was a bit smaller. I didnt unthread the TALAS, but i tried it on the damper side.

It is my impression, from what you are writing, that the 2013 TALAS-4 unit can be removed from the fork leg with no problem, i dont need that special needle to put it back again?

I now hav another 2012 180mm VAN RC2 coil fork, and I am thinking to move the coilsystem over to the TALAS fork (because TALAS is KASHIMA) and just swap the coil system. Will it be possible to fit the TALAS unit inside other COIL fork? Or will the smoothness of the inside of uppers be important to the TALAS unit? I know that its not possible to float convert a VAN because of the scratches on the inside of stancions, but does that apply also to TALAS system? I tried to find videos on youtube for the TALAS fork i have, to see how it comes out and is put together, but i cant find it.

Thanks a bunch for answering this old thread!

I managed to decode the serial, it was very hard to read. It is this model Fox VAN 36 180mm 2012:

Will the TALAS fit the VAN chassie? And will the Coil spring fit the TALAS chassie? Is this coil/spring function swap possible between these two?

The serial number you entered is for a ModelYear 2012 fork
