Got my Canfield Crampons in the mail box today. Such a huge improvement over my four year old funn sol jam vipers. They are fresh from the new batch of crampons. My pedals dont have the pins the screw all the way through like the earlier version. But mine also dont have the four pins in the middle of each pedal, which I kinda dont like. But over all Im super stoked on them.

I went from a tad under 13 inches of clearence to 13 9/16 inches of clearence, which is alot more that I thought I would get. I cant even explain how freak thin these things are.

And a pic or two of the bike. Plus my roommates sweet shuttle van. Paint done by Get Some Ink, in Medford, Oregon.

Yeah, just got mine today as well. Was kinda surprised with the changes to the pedals, this should be interesting...

Do yours have tapped holes in the middle body of the pedal like the old ones? I shot canfield an email asking a few questions about it. I dont have a problem, just thought it was odd. Ill probably end up tapping the holes and adding the pins.

No, they're not threaded, I thought that was odd as well. I was looking forward to the old design, I suppose there's valid reasoning behind the changes, though.

My mailing envelope had a hole in it upon arrival, I'm wondering if I should have received more than just one bag of really short pins.

I got mine in the mail today the pins are the same size as the long ones I have a pic where I mic.d them....
Im planning on tapping the 4 center holes putting pins in as well as getting rid of the crown allens and putting regular hollow allens in hole up and a little longer. Im not a fan of the pyramid shape, good ol pins with holes to puncture my soul is the only way to fly....
I actually rode both side by side and the old ones had a bit more bite...

I like the offset half threaded holes for bottom out but Im not a huge fan of pins and lack of compared to the old ones... They are identical to the others with the exception of the 3 center nubs and offset pins and a couple less pins on the side....

Weight and profile were identical, from front edge to platform size and layout as well as mud shed holes...

Are those really as convex as they look?
Only the outside edge that houses the outer bearings. The middle of the platform (with all the holes in and where you can see the exposed axle) is actually concave. Don't worry, your feet sit in them nicely.

Why did they make the changes then? Why not stay with pins that go all the way through? Surely it's easier to replace them if they go all the way through?

I've had my original Crampons 6 months or so now and they're still as good as the day I got them. Really really like them. Have absolutely no complaints. Definitely fewer pedal strikes with these babies and much better feel than any other pedals I've tried :thumb:

My crampons bearings are totally shot, the pins are backing themselves out, and having riddin straitlines, twenty6, syncros, wah wahs, and pretty much every other "nice" pedal out there, I wouldn't buy anything else. I got about 8 months so far out of my pedals, I'll ride them until they break, and then I'll buy another set. The grip on them is so much better then any other pedal I've ever ridden, I couldn't possibly ride anything else. I might be tempted by the point1, but the ride feel of the crampons is unbeatable (except maybe by the flypapers, but I don't want to buy a 560 dollar proprietary crank/pedal setup)

9/16 of an inch is the equivalent to 15mm. That's like running a 150mm crank in terms of ground clearance for you.

As long as you don't have those old school 165mm FSA cranks that were the same length as their 170's but with the hole drilled higher on the crank. :D

I'd go for that as a definite advantage on course.

Man, that is really lame they took out the center pins. I have had no issues with mine backing out or bending. Glad I got a good set of the earlier version. I can predict a lot of squeaking from the axle on the new one.

I would have thought they would make improvements on the sealing of the bushing and bearings more if anything. ??

Mine are 10 months old. Bearings went out a few weeks ago all the sudden. Running smooth, then crapola. Must have been the repeated river crossings and leaving the bike in the rain while camping. :weee:

The new bearings look like they are different. Metal seals instead of plastic ones. Pedal feels brand spankin new again. Bushing has no excess slop and runs smooth. I regrease it once a month or so. Super fast and easy.

Until another pedal comes out that is as thin and grippy and requires less maintenance, I will probably never ride anything else.

I would personally just take the slight weight hit and sandwich a little bolt thorough one of the existing holes with two small nuts.

Sounds like they're already broke?

they're 100% functional still. There is no play in them, and when I'm mashing my foot onto the pedal, I'm definitely not noticing the smoothness of the bearing action

I just check the pins pre and post ride - takes all of 5 seconds, and works out smooth.

So, annoyance? yes. Broken? definitely not.

Is direct from canfield bros the only option for buying crampons?????
I'd love to give them a try.

LOL @ measuring ground clearance with crankarms in the 3 and 9 position.
I just did the measuring thing to really give people an idea how thin they really are. You can take it any way you want. I thought it might help people that havent actually ridden them or seen them in person. But way to be a dumb ass.

Rode them today and quickly went and bought longer pins.

Regarding the clearance - why would the axle height be different?
was the question aimed at me?
If it was, I'm referring to a few different things at once. My brain runs on random.

By clearance, the 15mm you gain in clearance is strictly at the pedal.

My reference about the axle height was regarding the original FSA DH cranks that they made in 165mm. Rather than make 170 and 165 length arms, they just drilled a hole higher up on a 170 crank arm and called it a 165. Jeremy showed me his one time and it was pretty funny. at the 6 o'clock position, the crankarm stuck down past the pedal...really noticeable.

In regards to 150, I just mean that this pedal gives you as much additional ground clearance mated to a 165 crank as you would if you could buy a set of 150mm crankarms and run his old pedals. That any less random?

see the center of the hub spindle in your photos? that distance from the ground does not change when you install a thinner pedal. A thinner pedal does give more clearance...i've always been a fan of thinner pedals...but to calculate how much extra clearance it gives, just look at your photo of the two pedals on the bench. Take the difference in thickness, divide by 2.

4mm 0.70 tapered tap
4mm x 10mm allen screws

Tap hole till the head of tap sticks out 1mm or so back it out and blu loctite the bottom of the pin thread in and it will bottom out flush with the pedal and lock in... The holes closest to the spindle are 3.5-3.75 turns of the tap the regular ones are different. I noticed they varied a bit so I used the head protruding from the pin hole backside as an indicator. After threading and checking depth by inserting a pin and makng sure it bottomed flush I looked at the head of the tap to see where it was stopping so I didnt tap too far...

This lowers the 10mm pin 1mm more and its 1 mm taller than the other at this point. Id have opted for 9mm pins BUT the insertion was short enough that on that long of a pin and that shallow of a mounting depth it might have caused issues...

For the record the stock pins hook up amazing BUT I havent got a single leg gouge since swapping over to my original crampons which had a bit more bitwe than these and I like not having chewed shins and calves... The new pins make a HUGE bite difference...

Heres the new pins

Im over here now
Since running longer spikes on my old ones my calves havent bled... Part of the reason I modified these, the other pins were a bit smooth for my liking....
hopefully you dont slip with those bad boys. my Atom Labs pedals' pins are about that long and leave awesome scars

Does it come in pink? :P. I want to try those so much, but just can't bring myself to retire my pink straitlines. Those things are so bling-blong plus they work amazingly. So awesome, I love how wide they are. Tough decisions.

I did the exact same mod last night to my crampons. I think my pins may even be longer than yours cause the hardware stores around here suck and didnt have the length I wanted... Or didnt have 40 of them.

They worked so much better today with the longer pins.

4x10mm is what I used 4x8mm is what I had I tapped almost through and dropped them another 1mm deeper to get a solid bite and recess an extra mm.

I'm glad to hear that I rode mine around a bit and they hooked up really well. I'll ride them tomorrow at the jump park and the dh line

^^ Bullcrew, maybe I missed something but why do you need to tap the holes? Can't you just use existing holes to put in the longer set screws?
I tapped mine just to have more threads for the longer set screws I put in. In stock form the threads only go half way through the pedal. I... and I think bullcrew just tapped them all the way though. So in reality I could run the really long set screws like the first gen crampons that came out both sides of the pedal.

those Crampon pedals are looking good!

slipping pedals?

this is what happened when I slipped my Syncros Mental Magnesiums = ouch

hahah, I have a couple like that from the same pedal. Those things are vicious. But rad. But a little too thick, after riding some thinner pedals.

No mine bottom the screw out almost flat with the opposite side so they are infact bottomed out or ran out of threads adn blue loctited in.. They wont go all the way through I was real carefull to make every hole identical and not overthread. It drops the pins in another MM or so and allows a better bit then the pins were 2 mm longer than stock which was a bit much so it reduced them a fair amount. Id have threaded them down a fraction more like I did anywase to get a more solid bite...

Ive shattered pins on my old ones so I know the form of the pedal is stout, this also gives more pin bite allowing a harder strike and not chissling away the pedal holes...

And yeah I have bone trenches in the front of my calves from hits... But I have lalmost NO damage to myself since riding crampons... BEST pedal I have used ever, stability and stance is amazing matched with good pins = ONE SICK PEDAL...
