It doesn't matter WHAT is being smuggled into our country, the cartels will smuggle whatever is illegal. If down feather pillows became illegal tomorrow, I gaurantee you that we'd see mules with burlap sacks of pillows strapped to their backs trying to sneak past us. I don't give a crap about WHAT they're smuggling, it's the fact that members of another country are crossing OUR borders bringing in contraband and not being prosecuted to the fullest. Try that in Pakistan and you'll get shot without question, meanwhile, in the "lets give criminals a fighting chance" mindset of America, aiding and abetting smugglers by leaving food and water along the trail, in the name of humanitarian aid, is somehow not a criminal offense.
Norcal and Arizona drug interdiction are apples and oranges.

The flow of marijuana from Mendocino is not exactly Scarface, despite what Obama's DEA has you believe.

And even if marijuana is a harmless drug, the same smuggling channels through Mexico are also used by coke dealers, which is a huge problem.

That's why I hate cocaine so much: every snort in America is directly responsible for every drug murder in Mexico.

It's crazy down here! The number of dope smugglers who get off the hook here is ridiculous! A half pound of weed used to mean a felony sell/deliver charge that would be prosecuted to the fullest, now I'll get a very winnable case with 700lbs, repeat offenders, and the USADA won't even bother with prosecuting. Wild-Wild West out here man...
Fack man, that's a lot of weed. Kind of hard to pass that of as "for personal use". How much space does that much take up, back of a Honda Civic or tractor trailer ?

Where did you get that?
Remembered reading about it a few years ago, source long forgotten. Coal was so key to electricity and steel manufacturing for the war effort, production was considered more important than safety. And by more dangerous I think it meant more likely to die, serious injury not compared.

One of the largest US socialism experiments...the huge government dams of the West...were key to the war. Evil socialism won the war.

Reading The Cadillac Desert right now...

Beyond the employment and economic boon provided by the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam, there have been other lasting legacies. After construction was complete in late 1942, the dam had an immediate impact in helping the United States win World War II. As President Harry Truman said, “Without Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams it would have been almost impossible to win this war.”[23] Specifically, the Grand Coulee Dam provided the electricity needed to produce aluminum, which was crucial for the airplane construction taking place at Boeing in Seattle. With no capacity to produce aluminum in 1940, the Pacific Northwest was producing 36% of the nation’s aluminum output by 1946. It is estimated that one third of the aluminum used in aircraft during World War II came from the power generated by the Grand Coulee Dam.[24] Also, the Grand Coulee Dam provided the power needed for the plutonium production reactors at the nuclear production facilities at the Hanford site.

That load never made it to a car, caught the human mules backpacking it in. Me and 6 others had to pack it out over 2.5 miles through the mountains. Burlap straps designed for a 4'11" guatemalan are not very comfortable for a 5'10" corn-fed 'Merican. I'd post a pic if i could...pretty funny image of me with a triple bundle on my back, like wearing a pack designed for 3 months on the appalachian trail but with dora the explorer backpack straps ;)

Isn't one of Merica's most popular "sports" based off of smuggling contraband, and the practitioners heroes to millions?

Next time eat a few handfuls and you won't really care about the fit of the pack.

Why would we want to stop the flow of FREEDOM!!!

and corporate profits
Actually my question was only 50% snarky, I'd like to know if anything is being done. Tbf to Manimal that'd be the responsibility of the ATF (or whatever they call it now) I guess.

Manimal, are you guys doing anything to stop the flow of guns into Mexico?
Not specifically. The mission of the BP is to keep things from coming in, there are other, less capable, agencies designed to keep track of what's going out...and BORTAC Agent Brian Terry could tell you how that's going for us...if he was still alive.

Some people have no idea how the system works. Who needs law enforcement, anyway?

Josephine County begins dismantling its sheriff's office in response to May defeat of tax levy

It gets even worse.

Small potatoes right now, but there are about a dozen more counties here that aren't far behind. I was listening the the Sheriff of Deschutes county talking about planed cuts. A few years ago Oregon made huge cuts to the State Troopers and the Sheriff's covered areas they gave up.

Sometimes, you get what you pay for.

State police tape: "Uh, I don’t have anybody to send out there. You know, obviously, if he comes inside the residence and assaults you, can you ask him to go away? Do you know if he’s intoxicated or anything?”

Woman: "I’ve already asked him. I’ve already told him I was calling you. He’s broken in before, busted down my door, assaulted me."

The State Police dispatcher stays on the phone with the woman for 10 minutes and 21 seconds. She asks if Bellah has a weapon. The woman says no. She tells the dispatcher there’s already a warrant out for Bellah’s arrest.

Dispatcher: "Is he still there?"

Woman: "Yes, he is."

The dispatcher tells the caller to try to hide in the house. And four times in total she says there isn’t anyone who can help.

Dispatcher: "Once again it’s unfortunate you guys don’t have any law enforcement out there. “

Woman: “Yeah, it doesn’t matter, if he gets in the house I’m done.”

According to police records, a few minutes later Michael Bellah used a piece of metal to pry open the woman's front door. He choked her, and sexually assaulted her.

to be seized/resold to fund a police force?
If only. I found it funny that the "service" that SONORML provided to patients was to sell them weed at street price. But they didn't SELL weed, you were given weed in exchange for a small donation. The amount of weed given depended on the amount of the donation.

It just happened to be $10/gram.
