The only difference is that Ichiro has a a longer season then Sisler did...

Not trying to take anything away from Ichiro here, he is absolutley amazing.

True the season is longer now, but the competition is also much stiffer. Pitchers throw harder and there are specialist pitchers for damn near everything. I think if you stuck Ichiro onto a 1930 team, he'd get 350 hits. :D JMO, of course.

Awesome feat by Ichiro. That guy can do it all. He's also got one of the best outfield arms MLB has seen in a loooong time. Very cool that you were there, Skooks. :) I saw a SF Giants game last week and got to see Barry Bonds get intentionally walked FOUR TIMES! YAY ME!

ditto. steven jay gould's "full house" has some interesting musings on this very subject.

That is cool to actually be at the the game when he did it! :thumb:

That was an Hell of a feat, that record has stood for what 75 years ? Quite frankly I think that is more Impressive that Barry Bonds breaking Ruths/Arrons record.
Except that hasnt happened yet, Aaron-714, Ruth-755, Bonds-705.

Not yet , But it will. He will hang around long enough to do it.
Well Bonds is signed through 2006, which means he has to have two very average Bonds-type seasons to break the record. (he is only 54 short of breaking it)

Yah it's funny they used to ask if the Japanese could compete in the MLB. Now people bring up the added amount of games in a season, as if all the other records that have been broken since that time have asterisks on them as well. The only reason Roger Maris had an asterisk and where that all started from was from a commisioner that had family ties to Babe Ruths family. And IRB's comments hold alot of water, alot of people don't realize how awesome the athletes there are in the MLB because they don't understand the game.
And a final point is nobody can EVER accuse Ichiro of using steroids. :)

I do happen to understand the game as it is one of the things that I live for, and in no way is it a simple feat to bat in the .370's have 259+ hits and be on a terrible team at the same time :p . Ichiro is easily the best leadoff hitter in baseball right now, and one of the best of all time.

Japan
It's interesting how most Americans have congratulated Ichiro on reaching this mark and rightly so. A few years ago an American playing in Japan called Tuffy Rhodes was making an assault on the season home-run record in Japan held by Japanese baseball legend Sadaharu Oh. As Rhodes edged closer to the record teams would increasingly intentionally walk him regardless of the state of the game just so he wouldn't get the record because he was a foreigner. One of the teams that always walked him was a team coached by Oh. What a disgrace. And it's not the first time that happened either.
Japanese baseball figures justified it by arguing that the home-run record should rightly be held by a Japanese. Unbelievable.

Wasn't trying to single you out from my comments, back when i first got on the internet i got into a stupid internet argument with a guy on Hcor who said he was a better athlete than MLB guys who aren't good athletes, i retorted with using Michael Jordan's failure to make the bigs and also told HIM to go try out and make a crapload of money if it's so easy...
So when i made those comments i was thinking really, of that guy. :D ;)
