The girlfriend and I went on a hike at Patapsco this weekend (first time there) and I was pretty pumped to see that it looked like a great place to ride. I haven't been on my mtb in years, but now that I know something that fun is so close, I'm going to get my bike back in action (Cove Stiffee FR).
My girlfriend was equally as excited, but she's never owned a mountain bike. She's determined to get one ASAP and get out there before it gets really cold out.
My question is: What sort of bike would be ideal for her, if the riding at Patapsco is the primary style of riding? I was thinking a 4-5" dual susp trail bike might be good? Any thoughts to the contrary? Any specific recommendations? I have no idea what is out there these days. She's not going all out in this purchase...so under 1500 definitely, *preferably* closer to a grand. We have a Specialized/Jamis dealer and a Trek/Cannondale/Santa Cruz dealer locally, but aren't opposed to mail order if we can get close out prices.
Thanks!
