Information about those "gears-in-the-hub" transmissions?

I'm converting at least one of my older bikes to single speed, but I was thinking about first, possibly using one of those transmissions where the 3 or so gear ratios were "inside" the hub.

I'm sure someone can help me get more information about how to obtain such a contraption and give me advice for & against using such a device.

I think often of riding single-speed during my rides & it still seems very appealing until I hit the hills, then I revert to shifting & continue. I think one of the 3-speed hub transmissions seems like a reasonable first-step towards 1x-ing.

Thanks,

on your geared bike, just push the deraileur adjustment screws in until you can't shift anymore. make sure to lock it up in the right gear though :) i recommend 32-15.

once you ride the SS, you'll find your thumb going for the shifter all the time, but then you'll remember that you can't shift. but for some reason, it doesn't matter... :)
