Lucky! How much did all the dirt cost, or did you dig it somewhere else? I want to do a pump track that way over grass in my yard but I've been putting it off for a while.

the county provided 30 yards of top grade sifted clay. My buddy was the one shaping the berm turn and he said it was the best dirt he'd ever worked with. We are fortunate to have the municipalities standing behind us on projects like this. We have three different sites now that are recieving pump tracks, dirt jumps or dedicated freeride areas all owned by city or county parks and rec!

Very jealous...

I have a question re: pump tracks. They look like a lot of fun but what are their limitations in terms of speed and size. Is it possible to build a pump track that would allow for a section (pack) of doubles?

I ask being a complete noob to pumptrackology. Having never built nor ridden one I am very curious.

escapeartist, two of the pump tracks and freeride area will be around Huntersville and one pump track in Charlotte. LeRoy, yes you can have doubles. You pretty much just build what you want.

Wow I wonder what it is like to live somewhere like that. Currently we have zero funded projects for mountain biking because my county has exactly zero places where its legal to ride mountain bikes.

Man that looks really nice. I wish I had access to some clay myself.

I'm in the process of designing and building a Pump track for a local park here in Michigan. Their only stipulation was they wanted to go bigger than anything Mr. Lee had in his manual. This is what I have so far, I really like everything about it. I've got it all directional so you won't be running head on into anyone. It's mainly all 6 feet wide to allow for passing.

So what would be the negatives of a track this size? Besides the obvious of getting tired quicker, but you'll just have to pace. I like all the different options that this gives you too.

Thanks guys. Let's hope eveything goes thru with the park, just waiting on them. They also said they would supply the heavy equipment and operators to move the land, so that's a huge plus. Also that's one of the reason I went this big with the track.

I'm work on the land area and drainage right now.

So we started lying out the pump track over the weekend. We got the outside line all marked out and painted. Wow, this baby is going to be huuuuuge. It's a good thing I designed it with a lot of different lines thru it, because it would get tiring having to just go around the outside.

I'll post up some pics when the heavy equipment comes in and starts moving the dirt.

Nice. I have to admit, though, I've never really seen the appeal of pump tracks. Couldn't you just ride a bmx track? Or, better yet, some dirt jumps?

Or, it might be cool to use a pump track to get speed for DJs, if you don't have a roll in or a hill. Other than that, I just don't get it.

Pump tracks are a lot of fun, you get a great workout. Plus it's a nice cross over for Cross country riders to get a little taste of the darkside. We are putting in DJ's in a seperate area.

I think it's fun and different because you get speed not from pedaling but from upper body movement and finesse. It's a friggin' workout, that's for sure!

I'm putting in a pumptrack at my cabin right now. Lots of work, but I think it's gonna be worth it.

The only thing I'm having trouble with is the fact that our mountain has 0 flat land, so I'm having to cut real deep on the uphill and build monster berms on the down to minimize the effective elevation change and handle the speed you gather coming down the dh straight. Anybody have any tips for dealing with this? Like, how would you build the fastest possible hill climb? I'm thinking of graduated rollers starting big at the bottom and ending small just below the last berm so you actually come into the turn on a dh.

Another blast from the past.

The park we are working with had to deal with some politic issues over the summer as to where our Freeride park was actually going to be. But all that is now hashed out, so we were out there yesterday moving dirt for the pump track. I had to re-design it to fit our new area.

So let me know what ya think. I can't wait to get out and ride it

Just east of Rochester, north of Utica, 26 mile and Van Dyke to be exact, 45 minutes north of Detroit.

We had a trail day and shaped the entire track. We just need a couple days of rain and another day of packing and we should be ready to roll. We tested out a couple sections today and it feels like it's going to flow nicely.

Here's a sh.itty low res self-video I made yesterday. I stopped out to the pump track too see how our changes felt that we made last saturday. I't really starting to dial in. And you can see the size of this baby. I'm adding in one more line thru the middle for beginners, so they don't get discouraged by the size of it...
