I'm thinking of upgrading the fork on my Airborne Lucky Strike. I'm posting in the Racing forum, since I'm going to use it primarily for racing rather than the regular day to day rides.

I'm thinking of ditching my 2001 Manitou Mars Super for a 2002 Rock Shox SID - either the Race Ti or the SL. Any Monkeys out there riding a 2002 SID? Reading on the RS website, it looks like they doubled the length of their bushings to stiffen up the feel. I Had a SID XC at one time and it felt really noodly till I added a second set of bushings. I guess RS decided to build that into the fork for 2002? Anyway, I'm OK with the feel of the Mars, but not super impressed.

Monkey thoughts please.:monkey:

Cool. When he forms an opinion on it's performance I'll have to pick his brain. I can get the SID Carbon for $465, and the SID SL for about $360. Not sure about the Ti, but if they all feel basically the same and all get good reviews, I'd probably go for the Ti. Something about a carbon steer tube makes me nervous. My history with breaking forks isn't that great.

The SID Carbon is only 63mm of travel compared to the 80mm on the SL. Weight difference is small in the grand scheme of things. Plus the SL is on sale for $299 at PricePoint if you are on their E-Mail list.

Wow! $299? Hmmmm. Food for thought.... I didn't realize the carbon was only 63mm. That's out for me. I want the 80mm. Looks like its down to the Ti or SL and the SL is looking pretty good.
Thanks!

on my singlespeed race bike and like it alot. Before that I rode all Marzocchi's and loved them, but for racing, I haven't found one better than the sid. Definitely not as stiff, but the weight savings makes up for it as your'e killing the competition. The lock-out seriously kicks a$$ on the long climbs too. At $299, no question.

if i were you i'd wait and get an 03 sid. i'm running an 02 sl and like it a lot. espically b/c of the lock out. the 03's will have better coatings on the stanchions as well as some other improvements. i believe you can get an 03 now, but if you have to ahve the fork now, i'd say look at the forks in the line and what you can honestly spend. the carbon forks are great, but if you aren't down w/ 63 mm's then that's not the fork for you. now when you get whichever fork make sure that it is set up for 80 mm b/c w/ the sl and ti you can switch out the travel and i believe sometimes, not often you can find ones w/ it set up stock 63 mm and would hate for you to get one of the oddball stock forks.

I had a 2002 Sid Race that I bought off a guy who took it off his new Trek. While waiting for my frame I decide I wanted a longer travel fork so I sold it and bought a Psylo Race.

The guy I sold it to is a Semi-Pro racer and he says its the best fork he ever owned.

The Carbon shares the same internals as the SL and TiNi Race, they're switchable from 63mm to 80mm internally. I have a TiNi Race, and I love it, although I can't wait to get my hands onto an '03 Carbon. From what I've heard, the Carbon tracks really well, although I love the smooth feel of the TiNi legs on my fork.
I'll post a pic tomorrow of the bike, if I can dig it up...

suzy has the sid carbon and it works better than the old fox float she had, FOR HER.

She's only about a buck twenty though.

If you were bigger, I'd get a beefier fork (I race on a fox float rlc and am 210).

I wouldn't get a sid i'd get a RS DUKE race it's a bit heavier but it has better steering and it cost 229 US from pricepoint.

I'm going to wait for the 2003 SID Team - WOW! Sure looks good, anyway.

That will be for my new bike, though. For my Marin, I'm putting a Duke SL on - 100mm travel, pretty solid, much cheaper, and only 3.36 lbs - you can't go wrong with that!
