ive been mountain biking for a couple years now-i would just ride, to ride..i just recently started getting into upgrading and such-so i still have a lot to learn. single speed sounds like something i could use.i dont really shift tooo often on the trails i ride and my rear derailer snags a log and pops off my chain at least twice a ride-
long story short-
i know single speed conversions takes away the rear cassette and derialer-to 1 cog.can u still keep the front derailer to use to shift thru hills? or is it single speed straight thru?

ive heard of people doing that, had a funny name...
like dongle set up or something like that...

what you need to do is get a duel roller tensioner, and keep enough links in the chain, to allow for the chain to stretch to the correct length if it were on the large chainring.

You might also consider a device such as Truvativ's Hammerschmidt, which is an internally geared crankset, giving you two gears with no chain tensioner. Pricey tho.
