People who run short stems, 30mm or so. .. how do you like it? Did you add a longer top tube at the same time? What stem are you running?
pretty much.http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/f19/experimenting-stem-offset-240683/
You can get bikes with interchangeable top tubes?
Hehehe. ICWATCHUDIDTHUR...I put a 15mm stem on my dh bike once.
I had to shop around and tried three different top tubes before it felt right.
Riding a M V10c (Im 5'10"), ran a 28mm Straitline with my Boxxer last year. Currently 35mm, with a Van 180. I love it. My bike came with a 50mm Gravity stem and for some reason I felt too far forward, even with a med frame. 28mm was money, and the 35mm didnt feel too bad. If I get another dc fork Im back to the 28, for sure.
I think it would be physically impossible to make one much shorter and have it retain any structural integrity. Half the diameter of the bar + half the dia. of the steer tube take up 30.18mm in and of themselves; and there would almost have to be a web of material between so that the steerer clamp has 360° grip. What companies make normal 1 1/8 steer tube stems that are shorter than 45mm?
but aren't you on like 850mm bars or something absurd?I run my stem backwards. -55mm b*tches.
Do you mean like a HOPE crown, or Function crown? Or are you going for more of the 0 offset cesar style stem? My guess is that mountain bikers like ****, and a stem is one more thing to buy. Also, people are very personal about their stem, and it's kinda critical to a comfortable fit. Rise, and extension are very personal choices, but then you also get the tools who will only run a specific brand or color. Finally, you want forks to be MORE expensive by integrating a stem too? what standard? can we get a consortium of engineers (or just DW) to decide on a bolt pattern so you can run e13 by the HIV dual-overbite appropriate-yaw clamp ons?I'm still not quite sure why there are stems still, at least for dual-crowns. Why aren't handlebar perches just forged into the top crown at 0mm like a moto? Seems to me that a stem is a redundant throwback.
HAB doesn't count till he's off the wacky bike.but aren't you on like 850mm bars or something absurd?
Pretty sure Easton offers a 35mm.What companies make normal 1 1/8 steer tube stems that are shorter than 45mm?
logical fallacy. any bike HAB is on is automatically a wacky bike.HAB doesn't count till he's off the wacky bike.
800s.but aren't you on like 850mm bars or something absurd?
It's more like 63.5.logical fallacy. any bike HAB is on is automatically a wacky bike.
don't forget, his DH bike was my old DH bike. aside from a crazy low BB the geometry was pretty good. maybe a bit more slack than some people might like too. IIRC it was like 62° or 63° or somewhere in between.
a2c difference? when i measured it i had an old 888 w/ the drop crowns on it.800s.
It's more like 63.5.
yeah but the bb is like 12.5 low, right?
yes. When it was my bike it measured in at 12 5/8"wait wut?
Yes, like the Hope except not aftermarket. There's no reason for a fork to cost more if the perches were part of the initial casting/forging process. It's been a given with MCs for decades.Do you mean like a HOPE crown, or Function crown? Or are you going for more of the 0 offset cesar style stem? . . . Finally, you want forks to be MORE expensive by integrating a stem too?
I think that hits the nail on the head.My guess is that mountain bikers like ****, and a stem is one more thing to buy.
IIRC it was like 62° or 63°
Doesn't that sound like teh best DH bike eva according to ridemonkeys standards?yes. When it was my bike it measured in at 12 5/8"
well, could part of the problem be that bikes have variable stanchion extension? because the relative wide range of head tube lengths? I still haven't figured out why triple clamp forks still use steerer tubes vs. thin rods like MXers, as that would be a super easy way to adjust fork offset.Yes, like the Hope except not aftermarket. There's no reason for a fork to cost more if the perches were part of the initial casting/forging process. It's been a given with MCs for decades.
As for a standard, if you take the aftermarket industry out of the equation, there's really no need. The standard would be wherever Fox, Marz, etc. want to locate the bars on the crown to maybe still give folks room for the stanchions to clear if you want to drop the crown a bit.
I think that hits the nail on the head.
It's a little higher than Krankypants remembers, but yeah, it's stupid low. Hair under 13".jamis

You should have gotten it built with interchangeable top tubes so you could experiment with stem lengths.
