I downgraded to tracphone at $125 for 14 months and 1000 minutes total cost including cool retro flip phone. Ive used 22 minutes in 3 weeks.

In very short order most retail and hospitality will offer free wifi... Nothing I do on the web has to be done right now anyway.

Active cables and an authentication chip probably mean no cheap third party cables:

http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/25/apples_lightning_port_dynamically_assigns_pins_to_allow_for_reversible_use

Yay for Apple's proprietary B.S.. You want a cable? You have to buy it from us, and it costs $20.
they were available before the phone was out starting at $11

edit: as well as adapters to convert it to the older style for $20

double edit: it is too bad they didnt use the semi universal micro-usb but its no surprise they didnt

Or they could have used micro USB as all of the other phones do and minimized waste.
Totally agree; I had this conversation with several people here.

I know what the goal was; to avoid destroying the entire back-catalog of accessories that people have made. I think it would have been an opportune time to simply break backwards compatibility and move forward with a universal standard. MHL means that you can get video and digital audio out of the micro-USB port, so that takes care of 90% of your accessory market right there - doesn't help the past stuff, but future products will work fine.

it makes great sense for the apple product managers and sales peoples. The margin on cables is amazing. It’s a great revenue stream for apple. If they used mirco usb apple makes nothing extra on cables that are a commodity now. They have the loyal consumer base that might bitch, but they will buy cables, and lots of them for their old products.

Apple recommends Google Maps.

Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook apologized Friday to customers frustrated with glaring errors in its new Maps service, and, in an unusual move for the consumer giant, directed them to rival services instead, such as Google Inc's Maps.

iPhone 5 Issues Explained
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/09/iphone-5-problems/

1) Scratches easily like the other aluminum finished Apple products (use a skin, sock, or sleeve)
2) New iOS map app sucks (use google/bing/nokia as per Cook)
3) Purple Lens Flare "found that among several major smartphones (the iPhone 5, 4S and 4; Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One S), the iPhone 5 was the worst offender of this type of lens flare." (most won't care)
4) Backlight case leak (who cares)
5) Screen glitching (minor software glitch)

They forgot the new cable setup headaches mentioned above...

They also removed the Youtube app which my son used all the time on the Ipad. Commercial free and good swipe integration. Had I know it would go with Ios6 I would never have upgraded the new Ios6 as it really makes no difference on my Ipad. I am really not impressed with the latest offerings including the new 6. Also everytime I use Itunes i end up cursing the usability is so crappy. I am turning into Syadasti.

I was using a third party player app on android to access youtube videos but I think google wants you to use their own app to get youtube ad revenue - it doesn't work anymore either since the youtube app added video ad support.

iTunes has always been one of Apple's most horrible pieces of bloatware...

The Youtube app is an Iphone app so it sucks on the Ipad.

Maybe it was Google who really wanted to remove the Youtube app on IOS. I think both Apple and Google are being a little too smart lately. The goal to maximize ad revenue as the holy grale of revenue generation is ruining a lot of things. Also goes for the pressure for Facebook to increase their revenue both mobile and on the site.

Apple‘s dominance in the tablet market slipped from 81% a year ago to 51% in a recent Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism study. And while Apple is likely to get a “bump” (as political pollsters say) after it likely announces the iPad Mini later this month, I’m convinced that it will continue to lose marketshare to Android devices, just as it has in the smartphone market.

The iPad mini is a good idea, but will be cost prohibitive except to the die hards. After using the iPad here at work, I don't like it. It isn't easy to single hand and use, you need to use both hands or a lap. At the point my netbook is easier to handle, use and carry.

The Nexus 7 is awesome, I can't wait to try the Fire HD, but the limited Amazon market sucks.

Very expected growing market and mature offerings from the competition. It would be more interesting if they added information about units sold, total revenue and profitability. One problem for Apple is the apps are less important now that more and more companies understand how to do html5 sites so the ability to lock customers into their platform not as strong.

i'm curious to see what price point they launch the ipad mini at. part of me doesn't expect it to be less than $300.

$300 with some sort of contract maybe.

<edit>$499 for the 16G wifi iPad, ouch.
yea. one of the reasons smaller tabs (~7") have started to become more successful is the price. If apple wants to be competitive at that size, they're going to have to hit the right price point. if it costs too much, my guess is that a lot of people will be asking themselves why don't i just spend the extra money and get a full sized ipad?

Apple's next target? NCR Windows based POS systems... By thay I mean point of sale.
Who makes the majority of those systems now, I know Fujitsu and Toshiba make Windows based POS gear but that's all I know of?

Has anyone tried a 7" Windows tablet, surely that is too small for a Windows device?

Whoops. Apple ordered by U.S. court to reveal iPhone profit margins: The company must now make public certain information used in its U.S. patent battle against Samsung.

Apple won its recent U.S. patent case against Samsung, but the company may have to pay a price by revealing key profit details about the iPhone.

Judge Lucy Koh has ordered Apple to go public with information about its sales, earnings, and profit margins on the iPhone. As a corporation, Apple does report unit sales on its various products each quarter. But it stops short of divulging how much profit it makes on each iPhone.

Apple has maintained that revealing such information would benefit its competitors. But apparently Koh didn't buy that argument.

Another:
Apple Loses Tablet Copyright Appeal Against Samsung
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2012/10/18/technology/18reuters-apple-samsung.html

Apple has lost its appeal against a ruling that cleared rival Samsung of copying its registered designs for tablet computers, in a decision which could end the two firms' legal dispute on the subject across Europe.

The world's two leading smartphone makers are fighting over patents, both for smartphones and for tablets like Apple's iPad, in courts around the world.

Britain's Court of Appeal on Thursday upheld the country's High Court judgment that, despite some similarities, Samsung's Galaxy tablet did not infringe Apple's designs, in part because its products were "not as cool".

The decision is valid throughout Europe and should prohibit further legal disputes between the two companies over the design of tablets in the region.

South Korea's Samsung welcomed the decision saying in a statement: "We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners".

Apple declined to comment on the decision.

The U.S. company has been instructed to run advertisements saying Samsung did not copy its registered tablet designs, both on its website and in selected newspapers.

Apple can appeal to the Supreme Court.

"I expect this will be the end of the line. An appeal to the Supreme Court is in principle possible but there has been no indication so far that Apple plan such an appeal", Darren Smyth partner at EIP, a specialist intellectual property law firm, told Reuters.

"For the design of tablets in Europe this should be the final word."

The Genius of Google:

IDC: Android claims 75 percent of smartphone shipments in Q3, 136 million handsets sold
...Even with the help of new hardware, iOS lagged behind in second place with a 14.9 percent stake of handsets. Both Blackberry and Symbian clung to their respective 3rd and 4th place spots, making up 6.6 percent of total shipments. Windows-based phones (both WP7 and Windows Mobile) fell to 2 percent, keeping Microsoft in fifth place just above smartphones running Linux.

If only I owned a PS3 or wanted a Sony phone.

I really didn't like the tile thing Windows has now. Using Windows 8 without to touch screen was awful and even with a touch screen, it's a dashboard layout and I'm not a fan of dashboards.

Except that it's only the start menu that does this layout, and there's a full desktop behind it. Awful, huh? :D

I never got that far. I spent about 15 minutes dazed and confused as to where I would find a damn thing. It was less than intuitive as to where I would even start (hover in the lower left for "start").

And since you can app the hell outta it you can remove the tiles completely and go back to a Start menu on the Desktop. When people realise that apps can fix everything they don't currently like about 8 it should start selling really well. I have had only one problem so far, it refused to shut down, I am still running with no antivirus software and my computer hasn't caught fire.
