Hi All,
I have an english 68/73mm Hawk Racing BB with a sram kit. I have a downhill frame with an 83mm shell. Can I use the Hawk Racing BB with the 83mm bb shell? If not, would it be possible to by the Race Face bb converter for the Hawk Racing BB? If this doesn't work, is all I need to make the bb work a longer "spindle tube" to screw on to the cups?

Thanks in advance for the advice,

The plastic tube is not essential.
The real question is; how long is the spindle on the cranks you intend to use?
this.

If the cranks have a spindle designed for this size BB, they won't fit on a 83mm BB.

There's only one set of 73mm cranks I'm aware of that will fit in an 83mm bb. Those would be the XT triple touring cranks, which I'm pretty sure were only available in europe. Even then they required modification to fit; it wasn't a straight swap over.

it'll work with the 83mm cranks. you won't need the tube. the bb cups / bearings are the same between the two spindle lengths. the only difference is the length of the tube; and the tube itself is unnecessary.

I was wondering about the tube.... I knew you could just use your "old" tube with new cups, wasn't sure if the tube was needed at all though. So what is it for then? does it keep dirt and/or water that might get into your seat-tube from getting into the bearings as it falls towards the BB area?
