A post in the lounge about the end of the road (racing) season got me to thinking.

Who takes long recreational rides at night, 20 to 50 miles or better? I used to do it a lot when I lived in Cambridge, but haven't recently.

I used to when I lived near the reservoir and was single.

The best part is all the wildlife that's out and about.

It's also the most dangerous part... when a heard of elk come charging at you

Sometimes i do, usually when i cant sleep. I like to wait till traffic really slows down though.

Not me, IMO that's just asking to be hit. I prefer mtb rides at night.

I prefer to leave really early in the morning and return during first light. It's really peaceful being out there with no traffic. Downside? Can't read my power meter

I'll do the early morning(5am) thing in the summer, and I do night roading in the winter -- usually interval type stuff around the local neighborhoods.

if I ride at dark it is uber early, to many bars and no shoulders around here (in tahoe)

Other than commuting in the dark out of necessity, I only ride in the woods at night. Some of our night rides are 4 hours plus.

back roads and a couple bikes w/red blink lights & riders with reflective clothing and I feel safer then I would during the day.

I do it commuting , But even then usually if its dark , I Use a Nt bike, too many Pot holes to give you flats,

Tonight coming home , got caught in the dark, no biggie, I had my lights . but 1/4 mile from home hit a Pot hole I didn't see and pinch flatted the front..
