A couple of us rode Mammoth this weekend and I thought I'd post general impressions and that other would as well. I spoke with most of the bike park guys and they all seem to want to make the bike park better, so maybe some constructive critiques would help. I'm going to comment on the trail as I rode them, as I have not ridden Mammoth since they added all the new trails so everything is new to me.

First-- Kamikaze to Shock Therapy. These trails were really fun once I got used to the pumice, a big front tire with decent air pressure seems to work the best. Our first run was down Kamikaze to Shock Therapy. what can I say, kamikaze is crazy fast and Shock Treatment was fun but could use a little work to keep it flowing better, most of the techy sections were blown out by day 2. Also, the crew could stand to rebuild the small doubles at the bottom, and make them bigger too. I thought this was a great way to warm up.

Second--Velocity. Velocity had really nice flow after a couple runs of learning lines. Nothing too hard, nothing too easy, just nice flow.

Third-- ChainSmoke. I thought this trail had the best tech riding once I learned the good lines. A little more techy than Velocity, but just as flowy. Probably my favorite trail on the main lodge side. I really had to go slow on the first run because there are so many lines thru the techy stuff that I had to look at everything so I knew where I was going, which is kind of frustrating but temporary.

Fourth-- SkidMarks to Bullet. I really like this run, it's long and has a little of everything. Bullet also had the hardest section (i thought) thru the upper rock garden. I probably rode this 4 times and only made it thru once without dabbing. I need to ride this trail a lot more which will be easy because it's a classic.

Fifth-- PipeLine, Flow and Shotgun. Only rode these trails once each due to limited time and access. Flow was fun, the drop was good. PipeLine is fun, needs more and bigger jumps, I'm sure their intent is to fashion it into a DirtMerchant/A-line style trail, I hope they hurry and get it done this summer!

All in all, I thought the trails were really fun but had lots of room for improvement. It sounds like Mammoth has really dedicated themselves to making a great bike park, and by the number of people I saw I think they have a strong future. I'm really looking forward to going again in a couple weeks.

Anybody else have some comments?

great report B.

i'm even more psyched about it now... bneall and I are heading there first week of August

your write-up shows that the trail situation hasn't changed a whole lot since last year. Really fun stuff overall, but definite room for improvement.

I imagine they might have a fairly tough time building solid stuff like A-line or Dirt Merchant, as the dirt quality isn't exactly prime, and all that pumice doesn't help either. Stuff just gets blown out way too quickly. I'm afraid that by the time we get over there, it'll be pretty chewed up.

I'll be there with my family on the first weekend of August too and plan to bring my DH rig for a Sunday session.
Never been there before, will be happy to hook up with other riders.

i'm heading up there for a week to do some riding around with my uncles... from the 3rd to the 10th i'll be up in So. Lake Tahoe.

my uncles live up there and know some sick spots without lifts if anyone wants to cruise and ride... i'll know more about what were doing when i actually get up there though...

Trail Report - Last Updated: Jul 25, 2007 12:21 PM

The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park expects to be 100% open by Friday July 27, including the section of Upper Velocity that was closed last week. Enjoy 90 miles of single track trails that are in excellent shape, especially after it rained on Tuesday. The trail crew has been hard at work enhancing some trails (including Velocity and DC-10) with new wooden features. The intermediate Kamikaze Park is now open, with log rides, dirt rollers and the mini Bike Dragon.

Starting this weekend, take your bike up Stump Alley Express (Chair 2). The high-speed quad located near Main Lodge will run Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm through Labor Day. As always, a Bike Park Pass is required to board the chairlift, gondola and uphill shuttle.

Look for four new trails to be added to the map by summer's end! The trail crew has broken ground on Techno Rock, moving dirt and building giant drops. Techno Rock's drops will range from 1 to 20 feet.

Upper Velocity is not "open." It never is, I don't know why they even have it on the trail maps. It's not worth trying to ride though, as it takes a lot of energy to get to it, and the trail is hardly rideable since it's never burned in. "Erased" is a good word for the course. The only think that helps is the white dots that are painted on the permanent rock from the last race, which would've been the National held in Sept. '04.

And be careful of the new "huck" drop (parallels the high speed jump at the top of Lower Velocity) that is on the new trail that they are building under the Gondola. Take off has a lippy rock and significant drop with bad transition. It was just built and ridden this weekend, so hopefully they take the advice and make it better. Think the newer DV drop that was taken out last year with flat landing.

rode N* on Saturday...

it was killer, Livewire is the sickest f-ing trail man!!!

right after my first run, i went up to the log jibs by the lifts, overshot to flat on the biggest one, snapped my BB spindle and had to run to Truckee to get a new one... we made it back in time for a run down Karpiel and Livewire and then had to bail... 3 run day... pretty bad, but we got some decent footage, and footage of me racking the family jewels when my BB snapped! lol

saw TotalHeckler up there... and probably a few others from here on RM...
